Finally got down to putting some more music together. Here's a modal funk jam I came up with today. Kind of in the Jing Chi vein, except for the complete lack of melodic development. By the time I get the background together, I can't think of anything to play over it. Very Happy

Nice clip, Aeolian! The angular-yet-bluesy head reminded me of Scofield.

Yeah, those "unforgiving" Tonkers. I think I'm going to try recording with the 1-12. I'm not comfortable turning the 2-12 up in here loud enough to get working. Didn't do that well with mike placement this time either. An inch makes all the difference. Wink Whole thing sounds kind of dark to me now. Need to re-eq the drums and get rid of the ambient verb on the snare that gets messy on fills.
The background guitar is a Tele though my new/old DR with a Swamp Thang. It really gets that Tele twang and I was afraid it would be too bright if I tried to open things up in mastering. Live and learn. I understand why real recording engineers keep copious notes of everything they do and don't like to break down mike set ups until the albums finished.

The head is harmonically derived from the mode Mike Stern uses on Tipatina but I've been listening to Sco's last album a lot lately and dig that vibe, so the flavor comes out (like the Robbenish fills in between). You end up being an amalgamation of the things you listen to. Interestingly, I was talking to a buddy the other night who played with Robben and he said that he spent a week beforehand listening to completely different stuff to avoid anything Robbenish creeping into his playing.

Love the tones... You can here the Sco influence...and Robben too... maybe some Scott Henderson too. Is that a 2290 for delay?

Nice groove and chords....

2290! Shocked Right, wish I could afford one of those. I'd be happy finding a used D2 for a nice price Very Happy Nah, it's just the stock delay built into ProTools, but it is set to 116 ms Smile

Thanks for the nice comments fellows. When I hear it, all I can hear are the mistakes and how much I need to practice. This funk/groove/jam band stuff is catching on. It might be a forum where some of you folks that can really play could stretch out and show your stuff. Fusion is so underground you may as well say goodbye but there's an opportunity here I think.
