Leftbender's find of an old Marshall with Celestion 65's got me thinking. Someone posted here awhile back that these were common in Marshall cabinets during some period.
Some of this predates Daved's tenure but collectively history might be reconstructed.
I believe that originally, Robben's 2-12 Dumble cabinet had EV's in it. Same as the one Larry has. I suspect that these were Dumble's original speakers of choice.
On the Blue Line records, Robben has said that he put the Dumble though a 4-12 Marshall cabinet. I remember seeing him in larger venues with one or both Dumble heads sitting on Marshall cabinets.
Did these cabinets and/or the ones used on the Blue Line records have C65's in them? Was this Robben's introduction to this speaker? And the reason for swapping them into the 2-12 Dumble cabinet? _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Aeolian, I'm pretty cetain that Marshall used the 12-65W speakers in their 1960A cabinets in the past. I did some research but it's hard to find out during what period and why they changed to the more common 12-75W. I will try to find more about these mystic speakers. I have "googled" around a bit and even found out that this speaker existed in an ALNICO and Ceramic version. If I find the time I will mail to Celestion Ltd and Marshall in Brittain to see if they can help me find this info. _________________ "Don't play what's there, play what's not there" Miles Davis |

FWIW, I believe Mr. Dumble used Altec speakers in his older combos and cabinets. |

Marshall used the G12-65 in their early JCM800 cabs, then Celestion discontinued this line of product around 1982 I think ? |

Does anyone know how to tell if a 12-65 is ceramic or alnico?
Which one is more commonly seen?
Of the two, which is used by Robben?
just looking for a bit of clearity on this, thanks

Never seen an AlNiCo C65, would be interesting. Most AlNiCo magnets I've seen are conventional cylinders with a horseshoe strap over the back, like your typical cheap speaker. Because AlNiCo is sensitive to shock, they are usually covered with some sheet metal can. The ceramic magnets on C65's are the normal ring with a plate on either side. On one of the earlier speaker threads I pasted in a picture of my 2-12 cabinet with C65's in it and you can see the magnets in the rear view.
It would be interesting to fool with an AlNiCo version of a C65. But one of the things I like about mine is the response and lack of compression. Ceramic magnets saturate more gracefully. AlNiCo speakers tend to hit their limit and then compress a lot.
Hope this helps. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Here ya go......
http://www.webervst.com/crossref.htm
AlNiCo 1265
G12-65 Tone with AlNiCo characteristics
********| Lows
******| Mids
******| Highs
*****| Crunch/Texture
*******| Breakup Level
Vintage Series
12", 40oz AlNiCo magnet with ceramic booster, 65 watt, 1-3/4" voice coil..$165 plus shipping British Kurt-Mueller ribbed cone and large screen dustcap. Similar to the G12-65, it is recognized by the large screen dustcap that diffuses and partially absorbs the high end making it warmer, slighlty smoother, and it takes the edge off of high frequency distortion. Compressed and fattened at higher volumes.
There is a killer Scott Lerner clip there as well. _________________ www.hendersounds.com

Interesting contraption, has anyone tried this? Scott? Kirk?
How about the ceramic version?
Maybe this is the alnico version Leftbender found? _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

No, the speakers in the Mashall Combo are the same as those in your speaker cabinet, Aeolean. _________________ "Don't play what's there, play what's not there" Miles Davis |

Some info I came across on the Internet told me that there should be ALNICO 65's from Marshall out there somewhere! I will try to find a link. _________________ "Don't play what's there, play what's not there" Miles Davis |

That would be me, but nobody listened. I've never had any problems finding 65's when I need them. Peek inside any Marshall 4x12 from the early to mid-80's. Chances are excellent that 4 of them will peek back at you. |

I haven't ever heard of an AlNiCo Celestion 65. Probably a "shorthand" term used for the Weber creation. It should be ceramic.
The Celestion 65 speakers I've seen have Celestion "T" numbers ink stamped on the frame in black: T3054 or T3120. The speaker cone should have 1777 stamped in white ink on the reverse (Look inside frame with a flashlight). |

I gotta tell you boys......the best I've ever heard Robben's Dumble sound, was in 93....He opened with I Don't Play, using his Red 345 at the now defunked Bottomline in Manhattan. I remember his tone as if I was hearing it now. He used a rental cab.........68 Marshall Basketweave straight. Head and shoulders above the Dumble cab.....and I've seen him........20-25x's. That night was unreal. I spoke with him after the show and He and Tom were both amazed at his sound that night. I'm surprised I've never seen another pic, or heard a word about him wanting to use one again(besides the 80's rental......with most likely the 65's, he uses in the instructional video). Those must have been 25's......maybe 20's......that probably were blown by the end of the night !!! LOL!!! |
