What a show last night. First time I've seen Robben live (except for a brief glimpse with Boz Scaggs at the JazzFest about 15 years ago). Hopefully, someone's rolling tape for a live CD at the end of the tour, cause the level of musicianship on display is first rate. This is not some rag tag jam band. They are TIGHT!
I was surprised at how much free reign Robben had in terms of soloing, which was just fine with me of course. Others have said that as the tour has progressed, he has had more and more freedom. I'm just glad that people who might not otherwise be exposed to his playing are being converted every night, much like the couple my wife and I took to the show last night. They had that "holy shit" look in their eyes by the end of the evening.
About 3 or 4 songs into the set, it looked like Robben was going to change from his sunburst to the goldtop LP, then went back to the sunburst. Maybe Daved can comment on this. It looked like a frantic moment for the guitar tech for sure! Just like flying a plane, huh, Daved. 95% calm, 5% sheer terror.
