Anybody have an experience/opinion/comment about Les Paul Studio models? The local music store has 2 on consignment - one black and heavy and one brown and not so heavy - and I was thinking of snagging one if the price was right. Plane jane models, no frills, but pretty used, both of them. The Tele gods may smite me if I buy a Gibson so I want to be sure it is worth it!

There were several different Les Paul Studio Models manufactured, beginning in the early to mid 80's up thru the late 90's .Some had alder bodies, some mahogany....some with rosewood fingerboards, some ebony. Most of the examples I've seen did NOT have a carved maple top,{there are exceptions tho} so there're really NOT a poor mans Les Paul Standard. Don't let that deter you from checking them out tho, I've seen and played a few really great Studios. Do your typical inspection for fretware, what does she sound like , overall condition, how does she play etc.. then simply decide for yourself if the cost equals the want in you Personally, I Never let what's on the headstock stop me from checking out an instrument, some of my faves have been Silvertones..Harmonys and parts guitars; Every guitar sounds and plays differently, some sound great, others not so great. Over the last 40 yrs I've owned everything from a 1950 Fender Broadcaster up through recent imports and IMHO it don't matter where or who built it.....But How it plays and sounds
Hope I was some help _________________ Then Play On...

Hi Jony:
Thanks for the info. Best guess dates this as a 1984, mahogany with rosewood neck (asking price is 800 which seems bit high). Kind of plain, but I like that in a guitar. Plugged it in over the weekend and was not really smitten, but will give it another chance later. It has character, which is what caught my eye, and looks kind of like the mutt you bring home from the animal shelter that ends up being the best damn dog ever. And believe me, what is on the headstock does not sway me one bit. I have owned the good the bad and the ugly over the years and if it feels right and speaks to me it gets played. I don't collect anymore, but travel light and cheap and sleep better at night! Thanks again.
