Hi all
What a fantastic new DVD from Robben!! One nice addition is the'bonus material' interview with Robben. At the end of the interview it says 'to be continued'. Does this mean there is another DVD in the making? Daved?

Don't know, Jon. We, in the Robben camp, have nothing to do with this release. I haven't seen it yet so I don't know where or how they got the 'bonus' interview.
We didn't even know anyone was filming the show at the time. Recording for release or sale was never approved by Robben or his management. Robben was recently surprised to find this existed so I believe it is one of those things that Robben receives no compensation for or has any input in as it comes out of France, and since this kind if thing is approved of, supported, and virtually encouraged there, there is not much he can do.
If there is a "To be continued..." in the works, it's not something we know anything about or have any involvement in.
Another example of why Robben hates video cameras and 'personal' recording.
"This is only for personal use or trade. It'll never go up for sale."
Yeah... right.
SOMEBODY'S making money here, but it sure isn't Robben. _________________ B C-ing U!

This is truly a shame. But, I ask myself, had I known this ahead of time, would I still buy, or boycott? It's a great dvd, and I'd hate not having it in my collection... _________________ Soul on Eleven |

Daved,
I watched that DVD last night (again). There are multiple camera angles, closeup shots of Robben's and Jimmy's fingers, and at one point Robben looks into the camera and smiles. It really looks like a profressional production. I hate to hear that Robben is getting nothing from it, but it's hard to see how none of you knew it was being filmed. The sound quality is great, too. Was it a live TV broadcast that they taped?

I'd sure hate to think that Robben wasn't receiving any $$$ from this release, but I have to echo Frank's thoughts.
This is definitely a very professional production all around--sound, video, and packaging. I'd have to watch the DVD again with this in mind, but off hand, it's hard to imagine not knowing/seeing all the cameras taping this show?
it is definitely NOT a case of someone in the audience with a handheld making DVD dupes out of a basement somewhere.
In any case, I do hope it turns out to be fully legitimate. I've enjoyed watching this many times already, and I'd hate to think RF was getting shafted here.

It was difinitly a professional TV braodcast from the company with the name Mezzo http://www.mezzo.tv/ from France. As far as I know the show was broadcasted more then 4 times on European TV and all the Eueropean fans already had this show on tape or DVD. Although the TV broadcast was sonly 55 minutes and the DVD is the complete show. It's released by the same company as the Ohne Filter 1993 DVD: http://www.in-akustik.com/ from Germany. I can't imagine there was any permission for this broadcast. Anyhow, with all the many (re)released musical stuff these days on DVD, it's good to have this good quality show on DVD and it will bring Robben some more fans and focus. Perhaps Robben's management can shine light on this dark business. |

Maybe I'm wrong (not that I've ever been wrong before ). I'd have to see the vid to have a better idea, but I don't remember any recording-for-sale being aproved at the New Morning Club in Paris (that IS where this is filmed, isn't it?). And, as someone else posted recently when they had Robben autograph their copy, Robben was as surprised to learn about this DVD as I am. Possibly it was filmed for a TV show, but I don't remember it (Retiring brain cells with the onset of old age, maybe?!?).
If it was for a TV broadcast, I could see Dal possibly approving that for the publicity. Sure they release shows for sale these days (Got MY copies of Wallace & Grommit, The Tick, and League Of Gentleman ["This here is a Local Shop, for locals only.... there's nothing here for you!"]) and, I'd like to think that when they do they usually get approval from the creators and/or artists and properly compensate them.
But like I said, in this case, if the TV company decided to sell it, they've gone ahead and done so without offering any compensation to Robben that I (and apparently Robben) know of.
I DO know that the Ohne Filter stuff WAS approved by Robben and Dal, with compensations properly arranged BEFORE it's release. Again, not my department, so maybe I'm wrong, but as far as I've been able to find out, this release has nothing to do with our organization and its release was a surprise to us.
I'll try to find out from Dal what the story is. _________________ B C-ing U!

I would be surprised to hear that the New Morning , being a respected organization, would do anything illegal with this kind of thing ( but I could be wrong ) . A lot of shows in this place are filmed fot TV broadcasts ( on Mezzo, which is specialized in jazz/blues/classical and is broadcasted on satellite TV ). I guess that when they ask the performers their agreement for the filming and broadcasting, there is a contract signed ?
Maybe that it says that the rights of the film belong to New Morning ( and certainly that there is also some royalties for Robben in compensation, or a fixed amount ? I would be disturbed if not of course... ). |

In the credits at the end of the show it gives thanks to Dal Booth. I watched it last night again and watched the credits to the end and saw that. I would hate to see Robben get shafted, too. This is a really great show, and I have enjoyed watching it many times.

To Daved,
yes, it was me who posted in a different threat that Robben was like: "Hey, what's this? Never heard anything of this release, but I do remember the Paris-show" while signing my DVD. Thanx
