Steve,
Welcome, and turn your caps/lock key off...
Keep reading the wonderful posts in here- lots of great people, and lots of great info.
As far as getting that Robben tone- keep practicing and playing. You are what you are, and Robben is Robben... And, that is that... _________________ Soul on Eleven |

Good one, blue!
Tonics usually don't work. What we really need is a tone transplant... _________________ Soul on Eleven |

I'll give my best shot at answering the question regarding gear; however, the Robben tone ... that's another story.
Fender Concert 60 Watt Tube
ES335 Gibson
1983 Fender Tele
PRS Custom
Banzai Fireball II
That's about it! |

A Banzia Fireball through a Fender blackface twin sounds great! Also, a Gibson 347 with the coil tap switch captures a little bit of that Robben tone. But, the guys are right, tone is something that you cannot mimic, we each have our own feel, vibrato, and touch on the neck. Instead of trying to get the Robben tone find a tone that you're happy with. |

I love discussions regarding tone. My guitar technician buddy gets asked by customers, "How do I improve my tone?" He replies, holding up his left hand, "Here's your tone, man."
Gear can come and go, but your tone is yours alone. Another anecdote: About ten years ago, a friend in North Carolina went to a Robben Ford workshop at a local guitar store. Robben played his then signature Fender, and pulled a Fender Twin straight from the showroom floor, plugged in with no pedals and played. My friend was astonished that it "sounded EXACTLY like Robben Ford"...no Dumble amps, no effects whatsoever. There you go, a telling example as to why Tone can best be defined as a mystical combination of fingers, pressures, wrist positions, brains, emotions, technique and vision, with a smidgen of gear thrown in depending on who you are.

If you want a crack up. Go to the Gear Page and search on Robben and tone. Someone is always coming on that forum looking for Robben's "tone". And the thread usually follows the same path down in flames. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.
