Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on these amps...
I have an option to pick one up at what passes here for a good price!
Not so much after Robben tone - just a good touch sensitive tone machine. I'd prefer a twin channel (clean/od) amp (this is clean/vibrato) but I've got a couple of valve-friendly od pedals which I think will work well in place of an OD channel.
Is 22w, 12" Jensen (ceramic) speaker, all valve (inc valve rectifier).

Guitarist Allen Hinds uses a Deluxe Reverb and an AC Booster pedal, and he gets an excellent OD tone.

A DRRI (Deluxe Reverb RI) + maybe a new great speaker from Eminence + look over by a good amp tech (bias+tubes) + Zendrive and you are VERY close to Robben Ford! Not what you were looking for but HEY, this is the RF board |

They're a bit drier and less colorful than a vintage one, but reasonably priced entry into that vibe. I've heard of folks having the component values reworked to a blackface circuit. Vintage snobs will scoff at there still being a circuit board in there, but I've never considered that a liability just in itself. There is a web page out there somewhere by a guy who gutted one and had it rebuilt to completely match a vintage spec amp. He felt it was worth it. You do have the advantage of the power transformer being wound for 115/120 instead of 110 like the vintage amps. Changes the character of the output break up a bit. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Part of the dislike of the resissue Deluxe goes beyond the circuit board - they skimp on a lot of the parts in general these days, plus the whole particle board thing. But if the price is right and it sounds good, what the hell?! A real blackface deluxe will fetch around 2 grand (USD) these days, so these look pretty good. For all things Fender, and for a lot of discussion on the "reissue versus the real thing" check out this link - tons of good Fender info.

Yep, a big difference between silver face and black face is the glued in vs. floating speaker baffle. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

I have a reissue, and I sent it to Andy Fuchs and had his OD mod put in. Great sounding platform for this. |
