Hi Daved,

I've got a Fender Red Knob Twin and it has an effects loop. Do you think I should use the loop or not? I'm using a Boss Digital Delay, a Wah, and a Zendrive.

Thanks!

I can't speak for Daved, but the traditional approach would be to put any delay & modulation pedals in the loop, so that they come after any gain added from the amp's pre-amp (in general it sounds better to add delay and modulation to an already-distorted signal, rather than distort a modulated or delayed signal which can get really messy-sounding) - therefore you'd put the delay in the loop and have the Zen & Wah in front of the amp. However, if you're not using the overdrive channel of the amp and get all your overdrive from the Zen then there's no reason why you can't put all of them in front of the amp.

I put everything in front. It keeps my setup simple. Guitar to pedalboard to amp.

I've been doing some research and some people have said the built-in loop is really more appropriate for rack effects, not so much for line-level pedals and such. Is there any truth to this?

BTW, I am relying totally on the Zen for overrdrive - I'm not using the gain channel at all.

I guess it will depend on the loop itself. Some are more tolerant to pedals than others, and might have a level switch to accomodate them.
But you should not use the wah and the Zendrive in the loop anyway, they must go at the front of the amp.

That's correct Pierre. Time delay effects like reverb and chorus sound best in the loop. All other effects perform best between amp and guitar.

I saw Robben use a very similar set up many times years ago,.
Most European tours during the Blue Line days were -

Red Knob Twin amp
Boss DD3
Vox Wah
TC Electronics SCF
Ibanez TS808
Ernie Ball Volume

All pedals were in front of the amp. Robben did not use the effects loop.

This is pre-Daved days BTW.
