From the lack of responses to my "Long Beach? Anyone?" thread-start, I figure none of us got to the RBR concert down there on September 30, but "Southland Blues" contributer-reviewer Jim Santella did. Just got my November issue of Southland Blues, and enjoyed Jim's write-up.
Jim really enjoyed the concert, and had great things to say about Robben's part. "... his firery guitar combines tradition with a contemporary edge, as Ford pushes hard everywhere he goes." As for John Mayall putting all three of Eric Bibb, Buddy Whittington and Robben out there on the stage, Jim asks the rhetorical question, "Who deserves more of our listening attention: a down-home roots storyteller, a powerful blues/rock electrifier, or a resurgent mainstreamer?," and then answers his own question, "Wen enjoyed all three."
The folks who put together Soutland Blues each month do a great job. For more info (or to subscribe, or just pick up the Nov. 2005 issue with Jim Santella's review of the RBR concert in Long Beach), check out www.southlandblues.com _________________ - BlueRunner
