A few years ago (3-4), I saw Robben play at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA. It was the second time I saw him at this venue and, of course, his playing was fabulous and the band was great each time.......different players at each gig. The second concert was just after the release of "Tiger Walk" and I thought the songs were unbelieveable. For Christmas this year, I got the "Jing Chi Live" CD (bought it for myself) and noticed that some of the tunes sounded very similar in melody to the "Tiger Walk" songs. I checked the titles on both CDs, but they were not the same. Has anyone noticed the similarity or am I dreaming. I hope everyone's had a wonderful holiday. |

I am glad you bring this on the table . For me , you're not dreaming, the similarity resides in the Miles Davis vibe. When i listen to some Tiger Walk
tunes , make me feel like Miles is in the Studio. I feel the same quietness in some Jing Chi tunes. The mighty MiLSDavis vibe. _________________ http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_music.cfm?bandID=147748 |

I knew I'd eventually figure it out....it just takes awhile longer as I age. Months ago, through this discussion board, I found an online music clip with Robben playing with Miles & here's the link:

If you listen to the last cut on the Jing Chi Live CD, Blues MD, you'll see that it's the same tune.
Just goes to show how much of an influence Miles was on Robben's playing. |

That's what the title is supposed to signify: "Blues MD" = "Blues Miles Davis"
Notice also that Miles is not given credit for the piece. Robben didn't realize that Miles hadn't been credited when I mentioned it to him at a clinic, and Robben acknowledged it was a mistake. |

Wow, thanks for posting that link sfhalo! This is the first time I've ever heard Robben with Miles! To me it's a match made in heaven! Couldn't help but notice that Miles still had his chops intact (!!). Are those performances from the Montreux shows really the only available CDs from Robben's time with Miles? I've never noticed overt similarities between the "Tiger Walk" and "Jing Chi" (ha ha) but there may be a few...The title cut of "Tiger Walk" does have a similar haunting feel to some on the tunes on "Jing Chi". Interesting story on the Blues MD. |
