Hi All,
Long time fan and I've always wondered:
On Joni Mitchell's, In France They Kiss on Main Street (from The Hissing of Summer Lawns), the credits list Robben and Skunk Baxter as the guitarists. Anyone out there know which one is laying down those rippin' phrases?
Thanks All!

"...they don't wear no underpants..." Shocked

Is this true, Blobbie??? Laughing

Ok, jbear, you got me on this one...I have a vinyl copy, but my turntable is on the blink...guess I gotta get the CD.

"The Hissing of Summer Lawns" is a fantastic album, Mitchell's voice never sounded better to me, her lyrics are poetic, and then there's that dynamite backup band! (I didn't realize that Baxter was in there.)

So I'll give a listen soon!

Smile

Andy

It is a great album (as is Court and Spark) with a lot of great players. I'll be interested to find out who's layin' it down on that track though. On another note, I'd also love to hear all of the alternate takes for the solo on Peg from Aja, in which Steely Dan "auditioned" a bunch of studio cats including Ford. Jay Graydon's was definitely a good choice, but I wonder...

Ok, jbear...

I listened to the song, great song, I especially like the resolution to the major 7th chord on the 1st beat of measure 3. Very Happy

As for the guitar solo, it could be Robben...

There is one lick in that solo that I copped years ago...I'd forgotten where I stole it from! Laughing

It DOES sound a bit like another lick I stole years ago from "Chain Lightning" by Steely Dan, so I'll have to go back and do some more listening to Skunk, before I offer my final opinion.

Smile

That's where I'm at...I have listened to that solo a thousand times (and played it as many). There are moments that sound like pure Ford, but something about it (especially aspects of the tone) just says Skunk. I am stumped...and what better place to attempt resolution Smile?

jbear, pick up the dvd ,"the making of aja". becker and fagan go through the tracks on peg and pull up the different solos, although they don't identify who's who, some of them sounded pretty rediculous and none carried the weight like graydons. very cool dvd all around.

Haven't been around this board in ages-glad I came by and saw this thread. Wasn't aware that Baxter was on "Hissing Of Summer Lawns", but it doesn't surprise me. Thanks for the heads up on this "Making of Aja" DVD--wow, sounds quite interesting!
