Hello everybody, any comments on the book/CD: 'Rhythm Blues'? The book is thin, is the content good? Thanks! |

Go out and buy it, Alf! It is thin but it will give you some new possibilities and ideas how to play the blues! Very nice if you want to accompany a blues vocalist. Take it away! _________________ "Don't play what's there, play what's not there" Miles Davis |

when I bought the book it came with a cassette! I still refer back to it. When it comes to playing rhythm, Robben is the best I've heard. It's a great book.

I just picked up a copy at the Jan. 21 clinic, and I concur--go out and buy it, I think you'll be pleased.
It is relatively brief, but it's "all meat, no filler". And to some extent, the fact that it is brief and highly focused is an advantage. There is a lot of information in these examples (and in the additional comments Robben offers on the CD), but not so much as to be overwhelming.
Highly recommended. |

One thing that I really liked about the book, was that I was able to immediately use stuff from it. The next gig I had I was able to use some of the chord voicings and patterns from the book.

Thanks so much, guys! I also want to get his book 'Blues and Beyond', but as I heard, there's only a couple of tunes in the book, so is it informative? How is it compared with his 'Playing' the Blues'? |

It IS informative. the couple of tunes are "ain't got nothing but the blues" and "revelation". Each of those tunes could easily fill more than one book, don't you think? |

There's a lot to learn from those two songs. You can't go wrong with that one either. There's a DVD that goes with it, too. There some great stuff there, too.

Blues and Beyond is much more advanced than "Playing the Blues". Lots of good stuff, but you're talking diminished scaled, playing over altered chords, etc.
The video he did later (but which has only recently been released on DVD) called "Back to the Blues" is kind of intermediate between the two, and might be an easier step from "Playing the Blues". Some great rhythm instructional stuff on this one, as well as soloing stuff. Lots of live performances too (some of the performances from this were used as the "extras" in the DVD versions of "Playing the Blues" and "Blues and Beyond").
In any case, they're all good--lots to learn and lots of playing to enjoy. |

I bought it 10-12 years ago (when it came out) and played around with it a little back then. When I went to the Ojai clinic in August of 2004, we did a couple of the examples and I rememberd how cool they were. I came back home an learned ALL of the examples (cover to cover). They really are cool and a lot of fun. I recommend the book! |

'The Blues and Beyond' contains wonderfull stuff to learn, but Robben explains the songs as if he expects that you are familiar with diminished, harmonic and melodic minor and altered scales. So, as the title says, it goes beyond straight blues playing. It keeps you busy, though, and that's great fun! _________________ "Don't play what's there, play what's not there" Miles Davis |

You guys are great! Thanks for all your tips! There's another one called: 'Ultimate Guitar Blues Play-Along', it seems Robben has just 2 tunes on it, what's your take on this book? |

That's actually really good too. It's 12 or 13 high quality blues-based backing tracks, written and performed by Musician's Institute staff. They got a bunch of very talented players to do solos over the first 2 or 3 choruses, and then the backing tracks continue for you to play over. Some straight 12 bar stuff, but also some tunes with quite a bit more harmonic complexity.
I believe Robben solos on 3 of them--I know it's at least 2. But the playing from the other folks is all top-flight as well.
The book provides the charts, suggested chords, and tabs out all the solos. For each tune, you also get suggested scales, and fairly detailed analyses of how the player approached the tune, with comments on their styles and on the equipment used.
The backing tracks alone probably justify the cost, but the instructional stuff is really well done. |

This is a very good thing to have because its great for learning as well as routine practicing when you need some backing tracks. I recommend it too. |
