Just got my artist alerts from iTunes today and Derek Trucks released a new album on Tuesday called Songlines. One of the tracks is Chevrolet (Live)! Check it out! |

You can also catch his version on the Internet Archive live music site (along with hundreds of other bands). They have a bunch of DTB concerts...

His version of Chevrolet is great, very funky. He has also been covering "Anyday" one of my all time fave Derek and the Dominoes tunes off of Layla. |

How can one open a flac file? This is supposed to be the lossless filetype, right?
Any help appreciated. |

Winamp, with an appropriate plugin, will do that. |

Is that the only media player that will play it? |

Again, Winamp ( it's free ) will do that fine. Media Player Classic also ( you'll certainly need to install the Flac codec before ).
And then : http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html |

And, if you have one of the latest versions of NERO, it will convert it to whatever format you like (WAV, MP3, etc.). And, I'm pretty sure that no codec download is needed. Wouldn't be surprised if the latest iTunes will convert it, as well... |

OK, the tech-talk is fun, but now back to Derek: I bought the Songlines album off iTunes (with a gift certificate that was a Valentines Day gift from none other than ... my Valentine). Great album. I believed this even before I heard the album, but am now convinced: More than anything else, Trucks is a Gospel musician.
(And if you don't think Robben is also, replay "Water for the Wicked" some time.)
"We all cry when we should be dancing." So true. Hope you're all dancing this weekend, whether to Derek's music, or anyone else's. _________________ - BlueRunner |

It's growing on me but I'm still a bit disappointed that the best tracks on it are all tunes I've heard before - and usually better - on live recordings. I really like Mike Mattison's vocals, though, particularly as he had completely underwhelmed me at their show at the Tokyo Blues Carnival. And the dobro version of Chevrolet is very cool - a nice combination of the original & the Taj Mahal version. |

How strange!
Taj Mahal has not been a common, oft-mentioned musician for many a year. Indeed, beyond those of us who are products of the mid 60's to early 70's, I find few even aware that Taj is not just an exotic, shiny white building, somewhere across the ocean. A name that, frankly, I had not thought about in quite some time myself... and with MY tastes in music, that's saying something!
But during a dinner break in rehearsals a couple nights ago, while chatting with Gregg on the subject of deep sea fishing, he mentioned that I should go along with him "on his next fishing trip to the Bahamas with a few of [his] friends, like Taj Mahal."
Then I find out today that Taj will be sitting in for a couple of nights right around the time Robben will be guesting (maybe even the same night).
And now I read of this Derek Trucks/Taj Mahal comparison here, along with another reference to Taj by Patocaster on another thread!
Very interesting.
Just seems like, after decades of draught, it's all of a sudden raining Taj Mahals!
Do-Do-Do-Do, Do-Do-Do-Do
Sign post up ahead.
Next stop............
* BTW, Derek extends thanx to everyone for the nice comments about his new album. _________________ B C-ing U!

Taj is one of those artists that just keeps chooglin along - never in the spotlight but he can always be counted on for great music. I even have a children's CD he did several years ago (Sugaree, I think it is called) - great stuff. My kids loved it when they were younger.
And don't forget, legend has it that Duane was inspired to play slide after hearing the late great Jesse Ed Davis playing slide on Taj's early records. Statesboro, Diving Duck, She Caught the Katy. Check his stuff out - Davis is one of those guys that never got his due while he was alive.
So the great circle of guitar life just keeps on keeping on - Taj - Jesse Ed Davis - Duane - Derek - Allman Bros - Taj....
The new Guitar Player has a decent article on Derek, by the way. |

Jesse Edwin Davis was one of the reasons I started playing guitar. Hendrix, Bloomfield, Clapton, Roy Buchanan were the other reasons. Then I saw Robben Ford playing at DeAnza College in 1972 and he was added to the list. Davis' playing on Bacon Fat is pure liquid sugar.
