I have just checked out Steve Morse's site and found this in his news secton;
"Steve Morse will appear on a Steely Dan Tribute for the Tone Center label, produced by guitarist Jeff Richman. It features a rhythm section of Peter Wolf, Vinnie Colaiuta, Jeff Richman and Jimmy Haslip and other guest guitarists Mike Stern, Robben Ford, Al DiMeola, Steve Lukather, Jimmy Herring, Jay Graydon and Elliott Randal."
Oh yes!!!!

At least Robben took a shot at "Peg" and Elliott Randall played on "Haitian Divorce". I like Al DiMeola and Steve Morse, but it just seems like blasphemy Carlton not being on it. Maybe logistics, scheduling problem, etc. |

Maybe Larry just thought "been there, done that." Some of his Dan solos are so famous why go back and try to recreate something from another era. |

It's just interesting to me, as Carlton still does "Josie" sometimes. I just wonder if he was even asked. |

Red - good point. We may never know! These guys are so busy, too, you never know what they have to turn down to do other things.
I am curious as to what everyone thinks about these kinds of projects - multiple artists (in this case guitarists) interpreting another artist's work as a compilation. IMHO - for what it is worth - I don't care too much for these things. They tend to deteriorate into wank fests where everyone tries too hard on their one cut. I would rather hear one artist take on a catalog of another artist for a whole CD and really get into the work - the Scofield plays Ray Charles release comes to mind as a recent example. The nuances come through better to my ears and these are much more satisfying projects. On the other hand, these kinds of compilations tend to attract a lot of attention from the guitar community, where you can compare your favorite player up against other pickers. And this translates into sales, I assume. Just does not do too much for me. |

I have to admit that THIS was exactly what i haved in mind when first reading this post . Worst than this i thought what a silly idea he's not even dead(donald).Between the fact I Have to keep my mouth in tongs(arfarf) my tongue in mouth (ouch) and that it's not so easy to master english language i choose to restrain.
But how many of us know that Frank Gambale when he attended GIT in the eighties was yet a respectable kinda "Top 40" player who loved to play Steely Dan tunes even in trio (and he knew a lot).
Hopefully this will not be Wankfeast. |
