Just a few days ago, I posted a notice on Robben's discussion board about another announced gig with the Larry Carlton Blues Project in southern California: Thursday, October 12, at Humphrey's By The Bay in San Diego. I didn't see it on your list and thought chime in.

DISCLAIMER :
This list is by no means any sort of a comprehensive list of everything Robben is doing this year... And some of the things listed may not be totally confirmed yet.
It should be used only as an alert, as indicator of things going on.
If there is something listed in your neck of the woods in which you are interested, I strongly urge that you independently, and personally, confirm it before selling your soul to attend.
If there is something NOT listed, it means either that it is still too early to pass along any reliable information or, that it is a Robben project outside of my involvement... at this point anyway. _________________ B C-ing U!

Daved: What do you know about the 4/21 Bakersfield gig? It's actually drivable for me.
I don't know who the band will be, Robben is still deciding, and I'll let you know once I find out myself.
This will be a fun one for me, as I live here. My understanding is that it will be a stand alone show.
So, once Robben chooses his band, I will have to contact them and make arrangements to transport their gear.
Then, after renting a cargo van locally, I'll zip down to L.A. and back the day before show to pick up the equipment... and then reverse the process the day after the show to return everything.
Robben did this same show about 2 years ago. I don't know if Robben had ever played in Bakersfield before that. If so, then it had been many, many years ago.
Anyway, it's a "hotel" gig.
The local promoter is a huge Robben fan who owns a local music store that has been around B-field since my son was a kid. In fact, when he met me last time, and he realized who my son was, he told me that Kristian used to come into his store once a week when he as young, and carefully browse for hours till he made his one selection, and then come to the counter and turn over his week's allowance to pay for it, once a week, every week, for years.
When I told this story to Kris, he laughed and said it was absolutely true... it was his most personal and important weekly ritual when growing up.
I have to smile... like father, like son, so they say... it was also my very same ritual, with the same intensity and importance, in my young years.
Anyway, as I was saying, it's a "hotel" gig... in one of the rental assembly halls at the Doubletree, right alongside Highway 99, at the north end of town. Very easy to get to.
Bakersfield just opened their first real Arena here about 2 years ago which has now made it a regular stop for the major touring acts along the west coast. In the past, there used to NOT be any large venues available between San Francisco/Sacramento and Los Angeles (other than the rare Fresno stop on occasion).
But, though Bakersfield/southern central valley is one of the fastest growing locations in California, and other than Buck Owens's Crystle Palace for both country & western music, we still don't have much in the way of theaters, or large nightclubs to support medium sized tours & artists, yet. (Consideration for any promoters & entrepeneurs?)
So local promoters have to get creative in providing their own venues... temporary stages in the parks, rental halls, business hotels, etc.
So, Robben has been breaking ground here. His last show went very well. Enough so that the promoter had the incentive to bring him back a second time. Attendence was not huge, but it was very respectable for Robben's style of artist/music in a primarily countrified, proudly redneck city.
As I said, it is an assembly hall filled with folding chairs and a portable, shallow stage area at one end, with a simple and small P.A. and lighting system.
But, by the same token, it was very intimate and relaxed, which I think many of Robben's longtime fans have found to be the kind of environment in which Robben often really lets go and does some of his finest performances.
The audience was very appreciative to be able to attend the kind of show for which they rarely have the opportunity and a good time was had by all. _________________ B C-ing U!

From on online community calendar out of Bakersfield:
"Robben Ford, Friday April 21, 7 pm at the DoubleTree Hotel Ballroom. Part 50 of the No Stinkin’ Charge Blues Series organized by World Records. Hot Taco will open. Reserved tickets $25 and $30. Call 831-3100" (I think the area code for Bakersfield is 661, but check the phone book. Oh, and please don't call until later tomorrow, after I've had a chance to get my tickets!)
Daved: Re venues in Bakersfield, in another of those "I'll get to it some day" things, from time to time I've talked with my wife about going up for a weekend and checking out Buck Owens' regular Friday gig at his club. A few weeks ago on a drive to Yosemite we got off of the 99 at Buck Owens Avenue and swung by the Crystal Palace to check it out, and maybe make some plans. Then I came home this past Sunday, and the first thing my wife said to me was, "Buck Owens died." I don't think there was anything he'd set out to do that he hadn't accomplished, and there's no question that he left as one of those rare people who's respected, loved, and enjoyed by everyone, but still ... it was way, way too early. Especially for a guy who still had life by the tail (like a tiger?) and was loving every minute of it. _________________ - BlueRunner

Tickets at Yoshi's in Oakland are available as of this morning. I've assembled a small group to attend this show. There are four or five people that have never seen Robben play live and they are pretty excited about this.

The public viewing is all day today at the Crystal Palace and the funeral is tomorrow, here in town.
Both are open to the public. It is asked only that you NOT bring cameras, cell phones, or recording devices.
(Ha! Like requests such as that ever mean anything to the general public... after all, disrespect IS the public's right, no matter how crude, rude, and unethical it may be, isn't it?
Oops, 'scuse me, that rule only applies to public performances, doesn't it?. What WAS I thinking?!? Sorry... ... Still, it will not surprise me in the least when you see cameras and cell phones in use there, in spite of the family's request).
The main offramp from Highway 99 to the Crystal Palace (A seriously major artery here in B-field)will be shut down during the weekend, meaning you must exit elsewhere and travel surface streets in that area, in an effort to control the heavy traffic expected. _________________ B C-ing U!

I don't see any dates in Japan listed there. Have we been forsaken?
Bill
Bill I feel the same about Arizona!!
Of course.... B-field is my home town and it would make a great excuse to get home for a couple days.

Hi Daved
So...looks like Robben will be coming to the UK later in the year - great news!!
Any idea where abouts in the UK robben will be gigging? I guess as he's here for ten days he will not only gig at his usual London Jazz Cafe venue, but also venture up north maybe to manchester (I'm hoping so anyway as thats where I live!) Any ideas?
