On ebay I've seen a ohne Filter video from 1993 and 1997. The '93 video is with the Blue Line as far as I know (I've got the dvd). But the 1997 video is that the Tigerwalk tour??
I talked with Gary Novak when they visited Denmark somewhere around 1997-1998. He said they did a gig in Germany and I think it was the Ohne Filter show. Is that video a bootleg then??

Robben did 3 times the Ohne Filter show braodcasted by German TV. In 1988, 1993 and 1997.
1988 was with Bob Malach (around 60 minutes). Robben and his band supported also a performance with Steve Miller in the Ohne Filter show (I think 25 minutes).
1993 was released on DVD. The soundtrack came out around 1993 as a bootleg with the title "live in San Francisco".
1997 was the Tiger walk tour with Gary Novak on drums and Chris Chaney on bass (around 60 minutes). Great show.
Comparing to US, Robben did many interesting TV-shows in Europe, for example Burghausen (1998), Leverkusen (1994 and 1998), Montreux (1986, 1988, 1993), Rome (1988) and Paris (1996). Some of the soundtrack of these TV-show came also out as bootlegs. I think Montreux 1993 and Leverkusen 1998.

Lobster,
In Europe the laws aren't the same as they are in the USA. Here in the USA, the sale of bootleg material is prohibited by law. Robben strictly forbids recording of video and/or audio during his performances so that certain assholes in Europe or Asia won't get their hands on these "bootleg" recordings and sell them. Just look up Ohne Filter on Ebay and you're sure to see someone selling VHS or DVD copies of bootleg shows by Robben, most of these people are not located in the US, so they cannot be prosecuted for such actions. I would guess that the quality sucks though, so don't bother buying such a copy. Instead, purchase the live DVD of Robben Ford & The Blue Line's 1993 performance in Germany, available at your standard online retailer like amazon.com. It is AMAZING!

Hi Bluelobster,
There are more questions then answers. Ask the one who is selling those DVDs.
BTW: "Ohne Filter" literally means "without filtersheer unadultared music", according the words on the backside of the (official) DVDs I bought with Duke Robillard and Marcus Miller.

I have the Ohne Filter concert on DVD from 1993 and it's Robben at his unexpurgated best, on one track he can be seen to topple backwards while ripping out a lightning-fast run of notes. I love Robben _________________ To the world you may just be one person - but to one person you may just be the world. |

I have seen this '97 Ohne Filter show. It rocks. If this program is broadcast through the airwaves in Germany, is it a "bootleg"? I always thought artists had to give permission for this kind of thing, so am I wrong in assuming that the show is considered "artist-safe" for anyone who wants to watch it? Same issue with the Brazil Direct TV show taped w/Robben, Tom Brechtlein, Neil Larsen, and Jimmy Earl... It ROCKS also, and I'll watch it guilt-free unless someone can enlighten me to a different way of thinking... |

bottom line,
The bottom line is (pun intended) that it's a bootleg if, for example, you were to pay someone in Germany who recorded it and then sold it to you (on Ebay, it's everywhere on VHS, and therefore the quality of course sucks) because the ARTIST DOES NOT RECEIVE COMPENSATION. Simple as that.
So, watch it, but don't buy it. Instead, buy Robben's 1993 Ohen Filter performance available on DVD. Of course, you already did that, right? |

A thought came to my mind: if Robben's show was broadcasted on German national TV, he entitled to broadcasting royalties.
Artist give consent for their show to be broadcast on national TV. If the show was taped and broadcasted, Robben was surely aware of it.
Considering we are talking about Germany, he has probably receive some money.
