|
|
I'm at the very beginning of a great book on the last ten years of Miles Davis' life which was the period Robben played with him. I just had to jump ahead and read a few things Miles said about Robben and I thought I'd share just one comment:
Robben has the knack of playing the right things in the right style at the right moments. Another thing he has going for him - he doesn't over-play. He's an exceptional musician...a rare find. Some nights I just end up listening to him.
Its also stated that many members who layed with Robben and manu others who joined after he left, recall how much Miles would talk about Robben and how much Miles loved him.
Considering the musical stature of Miles Davis.........that pretty much says it all about Robben's playing.
Of course, all of us in this discussion board already know it!
So, if you want to read a great book about a great musician, I highly recommend:
The Last Miles: The Music of Miles Davis, 1980-1991

While I love Miles, I'm not so keen on the music he made in his last ten years. There's some good stuff but it's nowhere near as essential as other periods. Lots of guitar, though.
I always found it interesting that, considering how much he respects Miles and his music, Robben was in his band for such a relatively short time. I guess Robben wanted to move back to a more vocal/bluesy direction? Wasn't that just before he recorded Talk To Your Daughter? |

I wanted to check before I said anything so I re-read the article from the 1988 GP. Robben said he was with Miles for 5 months and left to pursue his solo career and finish the album he was recording.

Thanks, Frank. So Talk To Your Daughter was in the pipeline before he started playing with Miles? |

Robben told us at a clinic that Talk to Your Daughter had been recorded and sat around tied up by the record company for something like three years before it was actually released. _________________ "Somebody's got to make some music around here." - Robben Ford |
