Robben dropped by my room at the hotel after the show last night.
While visiting he browsed through my stack of CD purchases from this trip, sitting on the table waiting to get packed away (Hey, Berkeley was right next door and how could I possibly have missed a trip to Rasputin's and Amoeba records while in town?!):
1 ) Country Joe & the Fish - Electric Music For Mind & Body
2 ) Grand Funk Railroad - Grand Funk (remastered & expanded)
3 ) Grand Funk Railroad - Closer To Home (remastered & expanded)
4 ) Grand Funk Railroad - Shinin' On (remastered & expanded)
5 ) Shaun Harris - Shaun Harris (Bassist / vocalist for the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, this was his one solo album.)
6 ) Gary Lewis & The Playboys - This Diamond Ring / A Session With...
7 ) Lovin' Spoonful - Do You Believe In Magic (remastered & expanded)
8 ) Bryan MacLean - ifyoubelievein (Bryan was the 'McCartney' to Love's 'Lennon'... Arthur Lee. This was his only 'solo' album while he was still alive... a collection of rediscovered acoustic demo tapes from Love's heyday.)
9 ) Bryan MacLean - Candy's Waltz ("volume 2" of ifyoubelievein... released in 2000, shortly after Bryan's death)
10) Harry Nilsson - Son Of Schmilsson (remastered & expanded) (Probably my most favorite Nilsson Album)
11 ) Pink Floyd - A Saucer Full Of Secrets (The first digital masterings were in '94... figure the P.F. discs are about do for "remasters from original tapes", maybe to SACD format (?), so I wanted to get a copy of the '94 masters while they are getting cheap and before they start to disappear.)
12 ) Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother (ditto)
13 ) Procol Harum - Grand Hotel (remastered + bonus track)
14 ) Quicksilver Messenger Service - Quicksilver Messenger Service (needed a fresh disc - wearing out the old - seems I can just never get enough of Cippolina's guitar)
15 ) Quicksilver Messenger Service - Happy Trails (ditto)
16 ) Rolling Stones - Big Hits (High Tide & Green Grass)(SACD)
17 ) Rolling Stones - Through The Past Darkly (SACD)
18 ) Rolling Stones - Flowers (SACD)
29 ) Rolling Stones - Aftermath (SACD)
20 ) Bobby Rydell - Best of...
21 ) Sonny & Cher - Look At Us
22 ) Sonny & Cher - In Case You're In Love
23 ) Strawbs - Ghosts (Another disc I seem to have worn out... skips when I try to load it into my i-pod... time for a fresh copy for my archives.)
24 ) 13th Floor Elevators - Psychedelic Sounds Of... (remastered & expanded)
25 ) 13th Floor Elevators - Easter Everywhere (remastered & expanded)
26 ) Turtles - 20 Greatest Hits (Waiting for a quality reissue of their catalogue)
27 ) Wishbone Ash - Wishbone Ash
Robben saw the Country Joe album and begged me to let him borrow it. Which, of course, I did.
"I haven't heard this album in sooo many years," he exclaimed and then started singing Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine.
Then he and I broke into a rousing chorus of The Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag.
LOL... can you imagine Robben covering a little CJ & the Fish?!?!
Cracked me up!
BTW... while shopping, I also picked up a copy of Tom Waits' Nighthawks At The Diner. Robben and Anne and I were talking about Tom in the dressing room one night, and Robben told me he'd never heard that album. It being my favorite Waits album... I had to get him a copy... whether he likes it or not... (Tom's music can easily be viewed as "discriminating tastes" for many.) _________________ B C-ing U!

How could someone not like this album??? Wonderful songs and musicians in a typical TW setting. Tom's humor is killing! It's not my favourite TW album, that's Swordfishtrombones, but it's my second best! _________________ "Don't play what's there, play what's not there" Miles Davis
Just met Mark Stone of New Orleans. His humble collection of 2500 vinyls had been washed away by Katrina. Got your collection in a hurricane save place, Daved?

Holy Crapola!
Let's see- if you figure 50 minutes for each cd; 45 minutes for each lp; and, 120 minutes for each dvd, that's a grand total of 479,095 minutes or 7,795 hours of entertainment! Now, if Daved decided to make it his full time job to go through every minute of his collection, assuming a 40 hour week and 50 weeks a year (gotta have at least a 2 week vacation), it would take amost exactly 4 years from beginning to end!

I love that album. Isn't that the one with the line about his coffee being too weak to defend itself?

Wow!!!
I figured it would be a high number but that's more than I even imagined. Perhaps you'll reach a point some day soon where you can start to keep track of what you don't own, thereby freeing up some of your spare time. _________________ "Somebody's got to make some music around here." - Robben Ford

I need to keep those numbers handy for when a certain someone complains about my new CD purchase. Daved, do you keep the original jewel cases or do you pitch them and store the CDs in cases?

If you were to assume 9 tracks (conservatively) per CD/LP, you're looking at 79,371 tunes which would take approximately 5.3 60 GB iPods! And to think, I was impressed by a guy I worked with who said he needed to iPods to hold everything. What an amateur! _________________ "Somebody's got to make some music around here." - Robben Ford

Yup. Bill, that's the one:
"I was always, uh, kinda one who'd like to consider myself kind of a, a pioneer of the palate, a 'restauranteur', if you will.
I've wined, dined, sipped, and supped in some of the most demonstratively 'b'-mer, approtomable [?!] bistros in the Los Angeles metropolitan region. *snicker*.
Yeah I've had strange looking patty melts at Norm's. I've had dangerous veal cutlets at the Copper Penny.
But what ya get is , uh, a breaded salisbury steak in a shake and bake and topped with a provocative sauce of Velveeta and, uh, half-&-half *snicker*, smothered with Campbell's tomato soup. *snicker*
You see I had kind of a, uh, well I ordered my veal cutlet, christ, it left the plate and it walked down to the end of the counter...
.... veal cutlet come down and tried to beat the shit out of my cup of coffee.
Coffee just wasn't strong enough to defend itself.
Nighthawks at the diner
of Emma's 49er,
there's a rendezvous of strangers
around the coffee urn tonight...."

Daved: I may not have any rare vintage guitars or amps, but my vinyl collection contains at least one goodie, and from County Joe and The Fish, no less: It's a 7-inch "ep" record, called "Rag Baby" on the disc itself (but not on the cover) recorded June 6, 1066, at Sierra Sound in Berkeley, with "Bass Strings" and "Thing Called Love" on one side, and "Section 43" on the other. It was produced by Ed Densson of the Berkeley Barb, and the bottom back cover says:
"Send us a dollar - Country Joe and The Fish, Box 2233, Berkeley, Cal."
Wonder what would happen if I sent a dollar?
Anyway, if you actually HAVE one of these, I was going to say that I'd personally come up to your house this summer and eat a hat, but given the type of collection you have, my odds aren't good. So if you actually DO have a copy of your own, I'll come up and give YOU the dollar. _________________ - BlueRunner

CD's in wallets and sleeves still undergo wear and tear, especially when taking them on the road, so when at home I keep them all in their original plastic cases. I've found it to be the best protection.
My experience is that ANYTHING that touches the CD or DVD's surface can damage it over time. And, like worn windsheild wipers in the rain, that wear always seems to manifest itself in the most annoying places (ie, right in the middle of your favorite song on the album, the one you bought the damn thing for ).
I finally broke down and bought a 60G i-Pod last year, which now makes it possible for me to take a sizeable portion of my collection on the road while leaving the discs themselves safely at home where I can enjoy listening to them thru my high-end Sony 5.1 system when I'm listening for sonic excellence & pleasure.
The problem now is determining which artists and albums get to find residency in the limited amount of i-Pod space. It's an interesting process as I go.
Some artists/soundtracks/groups only had one album of any note.
Or, there is an excellent "Best of..." compilation which will satisfy for periods away from access to my library at home.
Some groups have many great albums, but only 1, 2, or 3 that I consider determinative or consequential.
Some groups have long evolving histories of great music, so which ones do you select? Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kinks, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Love, Strawbs, etc., were/are around forever with whole bins full of quality selections. How does one possibly pick and choose?
And now that I have fully loaded my i-Pod, I am into the process of detemining what gets 'erased' so I can fit in more of the music I had to leave behind the first time through.
Almost 300 CD's in there... about 900 short of being satisfied.
I guess I could start dragging around a stack of i-pods with me on the road. _________________ B C-ing U!

No, Blue, that IS a goody and though I do have a lot of collectable vinyl....
("banned" such as Beatles 'butcher', Two Virgins, Mom's Apple Pie [both the banned "pie-slice" original and the modified reissue covers], Mama Lion's breast-feeding cover, Wet's 2 albums, It 's A Beautiful Day with the topless Patti Santos cover, etc... "gimmick pressings" such as a variety of limited edition colored/transparent vinyl pressings or oddly shaped pressings such as The Andromeda Strain soundtrack on an octagonal disc packed in an expanding lens cover, Barnes & Barnes on a fish head shaped disc, Turtles on a turtle shaped disc, etc... "gimmick packaging" with a variety of constructions [desks, corrogated cardboard, sand, space ships, etc.] or 'attachments' [zippers, panties, large monetary bills, huge rolling papers, or 3d/flicker covers, etc.] from groups like Captain Beyond, Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, Cheech & Chong, ELO... "book packaging" by groups like Caravan, Greenslade, and Alan Parsons... and "limited editions" such as several Zappa discs from the Barking Pumpkin label, Seafood Mama's single of "Harden My Heart" from before they changed their name to Quarterflash and went Platinum as Geffen's first act, etc.)
....the CJ&F EP is one I missed, you lucky dog. _________________ B C-ing U!
