I saw a 1964 sunburst Strat in Guitar center selling for $32,500, yes that's $32,500! And it was pretty beat-up, the finish was worn off in spots and the neck was pretty bad too.
I had the same guitar in super mint condition in 1979 that I purchases at Rudy's Music in Manhattan for $850. I sold it a year later for $1,200 because I needed a car. So, I bought a Doge Dart w/Slant 6 enigine and another strat - a shitty strat at that.
I'm always kickin myself in the ass over that, but seeing that guitar in guitar center was like adding Rock Salt to my wounds!
Can you say DUMB ASS?
I'm going to rummage through old photos for a picture it, I'll post it here. _________________ Rod

Was that guitar previously owned by somebody famous ?

Or a collector with too much money to spend. This is where these instruments are being targeted these days, for better or worse. There is a good article in the recent Vintage Guitar about this syndrome - and how to just move on if you wind up kicking yourself over "how much that guitar you used to own is worth now." In reality they are just tools - if you are player. If you are a collector they are commodities to buy, sell and trade just like gold or art or whatever. They have nothing to do with music - which is what these instruments were meant for, IMHO.

Hi DD
I'm doing well thanks, been very busy w gigs through the summer (normally 4 a week but did a run of 10 in 12 days and several with two gigs in one day phew!). I keep meaning to send you my TS-9 but keep forgetting
The '64 sounds great but then you've heard it alot as it's all over the CD, maybe 10 out of the 18 tracks. Classic 60's strat sound, but needs a refret (don't know when I'll get round to that)
It's an early '64 with greenguard, spaghetti logo etc, all stock w OHSC. I got it from Rumbleseat Music in...L.A? (can't remember, got it a while ago before prices went insane, it's very nice but I certainly wouldn't have paid $32500 for it!)
I'm seeing RF at the Mean Fiddler gig, Nov 18th as I remember (even cancelled a gig because of it ), are you going to that one, perhaps we could meet up?
In answer to your question about gigging the '64................
Fraid so Bud! As Telefunk said that's what these were made for.
We're playing the Robert Kett again on the 29th of this month if you want to come along (I promise we'll play a whole bunch of RF for you!)

Hi Ron,
great pic; I think JZ has seen through the guise, and noticed that the diet coke is spiked with a strong tipple, hence the rather relaxed pose
I really enjoyed the gig of yours I went to, and will definitely come to more (maybe hear the '64), when work and family commitments permit. I'll keep checking out your website.
With regards to the TS9 mod, as previously stated, I will happilly do it any time, free of charge of course!!!! Just drop me a line when it's convenient for you. i can let you try my modded TS9 first if you wish, and anyway if you ever changed your mind when/if yours is modded, I can always put it back exactly as before, with your exact components.
I would have love to met up with you at the Meanfiddler, but I can't make that date, and instead i am travelling to Robin Hood country, and to the Rescue Rooms at Nottingham (looks a swanky place too!). My first time there!
Take care mate,
Cheers,

Ron S.: Thanks for the clarification on the drinks. I spotted the lemon wedge, but figured that maybe Corona was now making a porter for the British market. Glad to see you're still using the axe at gigs. It's sorta' like a client of mine who does oilfield guage and tool stuff. He drives a stock 1929 Ford Model A with his business logo painted on the doors. Collectors razz him about driving this honey out on the dirt roads in the oilfields, but when you see him driving around town in a 77-year-old daily driver, it does your heart good.
We all have the "ones that got away" stories. Early in my career I had health insurance that didn't pay for "normal" childbirth. Only for problems. And I sure didn't want problems. I sold a 1965 Gibson Hummingbird and a 1968 Martin D-12-20 to pay for hospital bills when each of my two girls was born. In return, I got two really nice girls (the older of whom just spent the weekend with me at the Long Beach Blues Festival) who, when they're home, enjoy listening to Dad make music on some less-expensive, but still very serviceable, instruments. If I ever won $50M in the California lottery, maybe I'd think about "collecting" something. Say vintage Strats. Or Ferarris. Or Picasos. Or the worlds most extensive and history collection of parking lot receipts. 'Til then, I'll leave it to the folks who can afford it.
By the way, is Dweezle Zappa still asking for $1M for that Jimi Hendrix lit-on-fire-at-a-Florida-gig guitar that Hendrix gave to his dad? It's in HORRIBLE condition. Scrape off the burned parts, replace the neck, swap out the pickups, refinish the body (maybe do one of those neat Eddie Van Halen graphic designs), replace those old discolored knobs, re-fret, and THEN maybe I'll make an offer. Until then, Dweeze, don't call me. I'll call you. _________________ - BlueRunner
