My guitar playing buddy and I flew from Denver for the show and were both in guitar heaven through the whole concert. We watched them rehearse in the afternoon and it sounded great from the first note! The weather was pleasant and Dave Mason was an enjoyable warm-up. Then Robben and Larry hit the stage and we got the musical experience I have been hoping for since the 70's when I started listening to the Larry Carlton and the Charles Ford Band. We had 3rd row seats, right in front of Robben, oh boy!
I have seen Robben with his group in the 70's that later became the Yellowjackets, with Tom Scott and the LA Express (with and without Joni Mitchell), with David Sanborn, and many other times with various bands of his, and I have to say that his tone was by far the best of any time I've seen him live. His Dumble (with the gold top Les Paul) was clear and sweet without too much delay. He seemed inspired and a little unsure of what was going to happen in the arrangements, which added an element of attention and focus that probably would not have been there if it had been a "rehearsed" band. Robben sounded great with such a high level band "jamming" with him. And of course, then there was Larry Carlton standing next to him, sounding and playing great! I'm so glad Larry has gotten out of his "smooth jazz" phase. Larry was obviously having big fun and was visibly digging Robben's playing. He was quite inspired himself and I enjoyed hearing Larry play so much rhythm guitar. I thought they both sounded great on the quieter, blusey, or pretty material, but Robben's lead tone on the more balls out solos was more focused and I just can't imagine a better sound. Greg Mathieson on keyboards sounded great and played some wonderful solos also, which gave Larry and Robben an opportunity to play rhythm together, wow! Larry's son, Travis and the drummer were great also, and I enjoyed watching Larry and Travis bobbing their heads together in unison when they were both really "feeling it".
Even after getting up at 4:45 the next morning and flying back to Denver, we agreed that it was well worth it and we were glad we made the trip. I recommend to all who visit this forum to see Robben and Larry together any chance you get.

I think there's a DVD -in the making- about the show(s) with Carlton and Ford, together, right? At least that's what I've heard (here) a couple of months ago...
I really hope so. Really, really, really, really, really, hope so.

There was a rumor that they were going to make a DVD of the shows at the Blue Note in Tokyo. However, although I did see a single video camera set up one night in the loft where the house mixer is, when I asked Robben about it he said that they were only making a CD. No DVD. So at least as far as the Blue Note shows are concerned, there won't be a DVD. Hopefully they'll do it somewhere else though. It's too good a show not to have recorded for posterity.

At the clinic last week, Robben said it would be on DVD. I could have gotten that wrong so I'll listen to the clinic again when I get a copy from a fellow attendee. _________________ "Somebody's got to make some music around here." - Robben Ford
