Interesting article in the April 12 Wall Street Journal, page D-7, "Are Strads Really Worth The Price?" Vintage and historic violins would seem to have a lot in common with vintage electric guitars. Do Les Pauls made in the 1950's really sound better than those made today? Do certain guitars come with some sort of "mojo" attached? If it was a not-so-great Strat out of the factory, but Jimi Hendrix played it, does it sound better than the Fender Custom you just paid $3K for? I'm taken by a quote in the article from viola player Roberto Diaz: "There's a certain aura of the ghosts that live in an old instrument, but those ghosts cost a lot of money." _________________ - BlueRunner

This issue came up last night on the way home from a gig. I mentioned that I had seen an episode of Fine Living that was about the Clapton guitar auction at Christy's. EC's cherry red ES-335 brought $800k, which was a new record for a vintage Gibson. My friend, who runs a music store, said that he couldn't believe the prices that vintage guitars bring. He mentioned the Strad thing, too.
