I was lucky enough to go watch Robben Ford play in the Cheese and Grain in Frome, Somerset, and I must say that it was undoubtedly the best gig I have been to. I was standing right at the front, and centre, which was even better, and robben was smart enough to play a lot of songs from 'Blue Moon', one of my personally favourite albums to date. I was also extremely lucky to wait, and have my picture taken with Robben, as he was more than happy to stop for me after he stumbled out of the venue.....
So thank you Mr Ford, for the best night of my life, (it wasn't exactly the best DAY of my life, coz getting there was hell...)
I was there too, not seen Robben for a couple of years, so it was nice to go somewhere close [ I live in Bristol, but am a Welsh exile :-) ]
Great gig, although the boss thought it was maybe not quite as good as 96' in Bath .... who knows I thought it was great.
Like you I thought it was a pig of a journey and I only had to go 30 miles, but the venue was quite good, not as 'boomy' as I was led to believe, and th esound down the front was graet - even if the bass was a tad loud/buzzing.
Only problem was just 1 song for the encore, maybe cos he had a support this time, and there were time restrictions?
Cheers
Simon

Simon,
This being Melvin's first time out with Robben and my first exposure to his playing, I too felt his sound was a little loud and boomy. In fact, I was actually surprised that it did not become a problem for Robben. Loud bass on stage is something I usually have to address if it happens (readjust volume controls. reangle the cabinets, etc.).
But it didn't seem to bother Robben much this time around (maybe because of Mel's 'bicky-boomy' playing style).
As for the buzz, Mel blew out the horns in those cabinets, we couldn't locate acceptable replacements and, instead of letting me dial them out with the control in back, insisted that they be left on as he said he needed "the clarity".
And, as for encores, Robben usually only does one song encores. Also, most of the shows on this run did have firm curfew times which we had to consider.
BTW, thanx for the W&G pin. I wore it thruout the tour and it will be going in with my collection of W&G curiosities when I get home. _________________ B C-ing U!
