Hey Fill,
First, how long is your stay? Unfortunately, I'm too far from NYC to offer you my place, but knowing the dates of your visit can help us help you! Also, JFK is approx. 1/2 hour from downtown Manhattan (central NYC) using mass transit, and driving, on any day, can be 1/2 to 1 hour. Other forum members in that area can clarify my assumptions...
Are you here on business or pleasure, or both?! I haven't checked the Allman Brothers Band schedule for their annual Beacon Theater shows in March, but if you are here during that time, you must go (and you get to meet Daved, or at least, see him in action, and of course, always a great show!)...

Fill: Sorry I can't help, being all the way over here on the Left Coast and all. I'll be interested to see who has what ideas. I've had limited experience with New York City, and generally everything's pretty expensive. (I did a college-look trip with the older daughter in 1996 and we stayed at a truck-drivers' motel in New Jersey and drove our rented car in and out of Manhattan -- now that was an adventure.) As for JFK, it's actually pretty convenient. You can catch the subway, use shuttle buses, etc. No need to use a taxi. Hope you have a great time. _________________ - BlueRunner

Dear RF-fans, Daved,
I'll be visiting NEW YORK from MAY 5th until MAY 9th.
I will be coming from NEWARK and hope to find trough the net a place to stay (less prise). Hope to go to BB KINGS'.
I will be visiting NYC to meet a friend, Mister RICHARD REED, a pianoplayer from Providence who I've met in Belgium, november 2006. He has a health problem, he's started being def in the 90' and has an implant now so he can play the piano again and learning tot hear again. I played with him in Belgium and he is terrific. RICHARD REED was the piano man with ROOM FULL OF BLUES and Duke Robillard, Ronnie Earl and Jr. Walker.
PS : Witch place (music related) must I have visited during my 5-days-staying ??? Advice my please !!! _________________ Filmore

Fil,
I suggest that since you'll be this close, you make the mecca to the Iridium Jazz Club on Broadway, near 51st Avenue, in central Manhattan (just a few blocks from B.B. Kings, on the opposite side of Times Square) to see the legendary Les Paul.
Yes, he is still alive and performs 2 shows there every Monday night.
( http://iridiumjazzclub.com ) It will cost you $40 and a $15 drink minimum, but Les is in his 90's now (but sharp as a tack with a wit & humor to match) and not getting any younger and this might be your only opportunity to see him before he's gone.
I, myself, try to drop in and see him every time I'm in NYC on a Monday night with an evening free. It is a small, intimate club with open seating so if you get there early you can sit at a table only a few feet away.
He only has the use of 2 or 3 fingers on his hands, but still plays and sounds great. His mind and wit though are still as sharp as ever, and aftershow he ALWAYS makes himself available to fans for photos and autographs. He is a huge fan of Robben's and the 2 of them finally met last year there at the Iridium.
The show is usually about an hour long with Les performing with his band during the first and last 15 minutes of the show. The half hour inbetween is usually like a variety show where he interviews musical fans who travel there from around the world to meet & marvel & sit in with him and his band for a song or two with whatever instrument it is that they play (I have seen [besides the obvious guitars], vocalists, banjos, accordians, violins, wind & horn instruments, etc). Go to the Iridium website (link above) and click on Les's biograpy photo on the main page and it will take you to photos of Les and some of his many special guests (including one of Larry Carlton). You never know just who will show up.
When I saw him last year, the snow was heavy in NYC and travel was rough, so his show consisted of only one interviewee and 50 minutes of Les performing with his band... very, very cool!

Gregg's son, Devon Allman, sat in with the ABB during last night's Beacon show.
He was very excited about, and proudly displayed to all of us, his Les Paul guitar that had been autographed by Les himself this past Monday night when Devon went to the Iridium and sat in there with Les. _________________ B C-ing U!
