Robben told us this was the last gig of their European tour and they (the band) where very excited about going home - hardly the best thing to say at the start of a gig! He then added they where hapy to be "here" as well although this seemed like an afterthought after getting zero response from his first sentence. As usual Robben played extremely well and the set list was much the same as has been previously listed on this message board. He kicked off with "help the poor" which has been in his set for ages but it just seems to keep evolving , amazing stuff! I enjoyed this gig a lot although I have to say it was the least exciting RF gig I have been to. The band where all very good musicians - but I felt they are not very good *blues* musicians - and did not gel together particulary well. The saxophone players out and out Jazz lines did little for me and musically and personally came across as a duck out of water at times. There was an overuse of doubling up the Sax and guitar/bass lines in my opinion. The set clocked in at about 1hr20 mins with one song for the encore which also made it the shortest RF gig I have been to. However as I said Robbens playing was very fine and they all got a good reception at the end. I was left with the feeling that they wanted to get this show out of the way (for whatever reason) as quickly as possible.

Obviously this tour seems to have been shaked in the mayhem of modern
times. .
Like i said in Milano, i was almost on the verge to think : there is a work to be done. oh yes as usual Robben gives the best. Where is the chemistry?
The global one ?
Then one told me in PARIS they blew ..... so that's just a matter of blues??
Anyway 1234Steve i feel your disapointment through the computer and it makes me feel good about trying to attend every gigs. BLOBBIE

Sometime we forget banal reasons like gastroenteritis.

You know, travelling around Europe, eating different things and drinking different water can have some funny effects.

Gastroenteritis seriously gives you the blues, but it doesn't affect ones playing or the duration of the concert in a postive way.

I was thinking about this because earlier on this week I had a close encounter with an aging Milanese Steak (Cotoletta Milanese) which is still having adverse effects on my well-being and my professional performance.

You know, musicians are human as well....

Hi ,

I've just re-read my original post and maybe it comes across a bit over critical - I had a good time and we heard some great soloing from Robben - I guess the previous gigs/tours here had given me extremely high expectations :-)

You are right about the dangers of continental food - they should have had british food throughout the tour - as you know we are cusuine experts of Europe! ;)

Cheers

Steve

Don't worry Steve,

my review of the Milano concert was similar to yours and I felt the same way afterwards...I thought about cancelling my post, but then I told myself that I among friends here and they will understand.

The issue is that, because his playing and music is so exceptional, Robben sets high expectations in some of us.

What I try to do in a jokingly manner is to say that Robben, like everyone, is allowed to have a so-so concert now and then.

To me. this just confirms that he is the exceptional human being I think he is.

Robben stays no 1 in my books. Cool
