I already posted this, but it disappeared into cyberspace. What's up with that?
Yesterday was so close to being a disaster, but a miss is as good as a mile. Heavy traffic, accidents and rubber neckers, and there we were, looking at the reality that there was NO WAY to make it to the Santa Cruz Blues Festival by 1:50, when Robben was scheduled to play.
I guess I do not have to tell you what it must have been like to have me as a passenger, as I watched the clock slowly move from 10:30 to 1:55...I TRIED to behave, really I did!
So, there we were, hideously late, with me running down the hill to try to get to hear a little bit of Robben's set, and COULD IT BE? The Universe must have been shining down on me, because at the very moment I was tearing down the grass, they introduced Robben! I could not believe it.
Robben played with Greg Mathieson, Chris Cheney, and Gary Novak, and it was a rare treat, because we got to hear a few of the songs that will be on the updcoming album; he said we were the first in the US to hear them. I guess they had tried them out in Norway already. Really nice, including a great Otis Redding tune, one written by his nephew Gabriel, the B.B. King tribute he wrote with Keb Mo, and a new one that, in my opinion, was heavily influenced by Willie Dixon's You Can't Make Peace. The title is something like Peace On My Mind, but don't quote me. It is beautiful, obviously heartfelt, haunting, and very Robben.
Some of the new music made me think back to Blue Moon, not in similarity to songs, but the feel and mood. And the best part was that it looked like he was having an absolute blast playing! His Lovin' Cup andThe Way That You Treated Me were some of the best I have heard in a long time.
Lucky me that the parking gods, the late start genies, and the time elves must always keep their eye on me, because once again, I seem to live a charmed life!
Saturday, seeing Sonny Landreth, Roy Rogers, and Jackie Greene (wow, is he amazing for a 25 year old?) and Sunday, with Robben, Little Feat, and Etta (ok, so I missed Tommy Castro, but I see him all the time up here, so I can make up for it) was a Memorial Day weekend worth remembering!
And roadwarriorforthe blues, I couldn't help waxing nostalgic for the last time Robben played the SCBF...how long ago was it? Jeez, that was fun!
Back to work...no, I am not dead, just ridiculously overwhelmed with work, a graduating senior, and a daughter who has moved back home. (And here I actually thought I was getting close to being an empty nester...hah!)

Very nice to hear from you again Lizzy, and how lucky you must be seeing Robben. A couple of weeks ago he was in Antwerp Belgium. His new songs are indeed very tasteful!! Can't wait till the new album comes out!

Nice write up, Lizzy,
Check out my set list I did my best to describe the songs,
but being new I was stumped.
Too Bad you missed Tommy Castro and Gang but
the extended encore with Cocoa and Mike may have
given you that extra time to see Robben.
Cheers,
pf

Hi Elizabeth,
That was 2003. What a weekend. Ray Charles, The Ford Blues Band, and so many other great artists.
I'm trying to schedule a trip to Northern Cal. in September. Riverboating up the Napa River Delta with some of my favorite Blues artists. It sounds too good to be true!
Thanks for the festival write up. Can't wait to hear Robben's new songs for myself! _________________ Travelling by train of thought
