Cool Fabulous concert last night at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in Los Angeles. Derek's vocalist Tim Mattison and guitarist Paul Olsen opened the show with their Scrapomatic duet program, doing some fine roadhouse standards, as bassist Todd Smallie and Derek's drumming 18-year-old brother Duane joined in for the last couple of tunes before the break. Then it was the full Derek and Susan band for over two hours of fabulous music.

So some questions for you guys and gals who follow bothe Derek and Susan:

They did a "sit down" roadhouse style set, Susan singing and Derek playing some interesting gear. It looked like an old Princeton Reverb that he pulled onto the stage and miked. As for guitars, does anyone know about the vintage-looking Duolian-type he plays? Or how about the two electrics he used for this set: One looked like it could be one of the 1960's Valco-made wooden Nationals. Another looked for all the world like that early 60's Airline that Montgomery Ward sold, with the amp in the guitar case. Smallie sat in with another interesting looking guitar.

And what is Susan playing these days? It has a D'Angelico-style headstock, butter-colored finish, and nice sound. And sure isn't her traditional telecaster.

The whole band was obviously having a fun time together. Hard to beat that sort of thing when you combine it with amazing chops. Definitely a night to remember.

The Soul Stew Revival is rounding off a West Coast leg this week, at the Fillmore in SF tonight,in Saratoga (San Jose Area) tomorrow, then Oregon and Washington. Well worth going way out of your way to enjoy. Tour info at http://www.derektrucks.com/tour_info.html

Blue,
That IS a D'Angelico which Susan uses on some songs.
She has had it at least as long as I've known and worked with her.
The story I was told at one point was that the guitar was originally given to Derek, but Susan fell in love with it and, since it is not the kind of guitar Derek normally plays, he gave it to her and it has become one of her primary guitars.

Cool Thanks, Daved! I also figure that in addition to it not being something Derek would normally play, when one's guitar-playing wife says that she really likes one's guitar, one would normally ...

Also, after my first post I found the Blues Revue story from a year or so back in which Derek talks about the National. It once belonged to Bukka White. A guitar with some serious history in its bones.

By the way, my wife is not generally one to get excited about loud rhythm & blues, but she was absolutely blown away by the show, and hasn't stopped talking about it.

Slight aside here...

Has any of Derek's stolen equipment ever turned up?

Yes, a good chunk of it was found in a public dump having stewed in the sun & waste juices for a period of time.

I know at least one super reverb, the Hammond organ setup, and some other things were found.

Last I heard, mostly the drums were still missing, but this was several months ago towards the beginning of the year.
