Robben Ford vs. Porcupine tree
Their new releases are at the top of my list for best of 2007. They are very different styles of music but both exceptionally good. I am a new fan to Porcupine tree since I finally broke down and got there new disk “fear of a blank planet”. I have been a fan of Robben Ford since I first saw him perform at MI in 1988 and then got “Talk to your daughter” and was hooked. I have everything RF has put out since then and usually got the new disks within a day of release. In the early 90s I got divorced, out went the wife and in came the Amp into the living room. I would play along with my RF disks and Gary Moore stuff to take my mind off things by playing the blues. I could play just about all the guitar parts of the first ‘Blue line’ disk and Gary Moore’s project with Jack Bruce and Mr. Baker “BBM”. The P.T. CD is about as void of the blues as you can get I try to be that too (in life and playing) but still find it showing up in my playing.
The new RF “Truth” is as good as any of Robben’s previous disks, Susan Tedeschi is a great guest and Bernie Worrell along with all the players. Bernie has played with Buckethead a lot over the years so I have a new theory…….
Robben Ford = Buckethead????? Could it be??!! They have similar hair…
Honorable mention’s for best of 2007: Dream Theater / Symphony X
Any one have any recommendations for 2007 releases?? |

rainmkr63,
I applaud your diverse musical tastes. I have been into P-Tree for years & though the new 'Planet' record is good I highly recommend "Deadwing"
& "Stupid Dream". |

I got there DVD “Arriving Somewhere” and that probably has a few cuts from those disk’s you recommended. I was looking to get “The Absentia” but should I go for the others first?
I am a fan of jazz and fusion instrumental stuff but play a lot of classic rock and prog blues. This Porcupine tree is finally giving me some hope that semi pop music still has something to say. I will consider the new Joe B. too.
Thanks for the recommendations.

"Absentia" is also very interesting. P-Tree played San Diego a couple years ago with Robert Fripp opening, if you can believe that.
"Mystic Mile" is still my fav Robben record. "Blues Deluxe" by Joe B & "Guitar" by Jimmy Thackery are good choices as well. A couple of sleepers for you that I play a lot are "Ace of Harps" by Charlie Musselwhite & "Open" by Rod Price who you might remember was with Foghat.
Enjoy ! |

rainmkr, I think I understand the types of music you appreciate, so I highly recommend Neil Larsen's Orbit for you. _________________ Soul on Eleven |
