I wonder if you guys could help me trace a banjo player I last heard in the 70s. A friend of mine introduced me to his music back in - well, sometime around 1976, 77. He's American and played kind of country rock, if I recall correctly - no Flat-Scruggs stuff. It's not Bela Fleck. I realize that this isn't really much information to go on, but I can't for the life of me remember his name, and I would really like to trace him and catch up on what he's been doing lately. Thanks!

Sorry, no - even though I love the Dirt Band, it ain't John McEuen.

Are you thinking of the late, great John Hartford, banjo renaissance man. of "Gentle On My Mind" fame?

Thanks Pat, but no, it's not John Hartford. I'm beginning to wish I'd never gone down memory lane in the first place.

Thanks for the suggestions, Andy. I know it's not Danny Gatton, and I've checked out Doug Dillard on the web and I'm afraid it's not him either.

Oh well, to quote a hackneyed phrase, nostalgia's not what it used to be. Thanks anyway guys. I really appreciate your help, and it's also brought up a few connections too - John McEuen and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Haven't heard them in years. Great band. Also John Hartford and the Oh Brother Where Art Thou link - got the DVD and must seen it 6 or 7 times so far. Never get tired of it.

Now I wonder if anyone can recall this Chinese nose-flute player from the 1940s ...

I know it's not the guy, but Bernie Leadon of the original Eagles line-up was a decent banjo player and was around at the the time your first e-mail referred to. Hardly in the league of the players who have been referenced here but he has his place in musical folklore........
