If you were playing a range of material covering Robben-style blues, The Dan, Allmans etc. You would have the core members on guitar, bass and drums. If you could appoint two other players to round out the sound, what would you choose? It sounds really obvious, but sometimes you'll see a line-up with someone on flute (we have that in a prog band I occasionally work with) or other exotica. I thought it might make for a little diversion from some of our recent 'childish' pursuits (!!). My other motivation here is purely selfish as I am thinking about possible line-ups for a little venture that I've been pondering. Of course, additional players can feature more than one instrument....
Hope everyone is okay and battening down those hatches in readiness for the dark nights |

I suppose the obvious would be keys as they can cover most instruments (some more effectively than others though )
Personally I like a good brass section, but a harp player and a percussionist would be killer. Mmmm! On the other hand a couple of attractive backing singer/dancers would bring more people to gigs!
Definitely not another guitarist |

I vote for keyboard, too. It just fills such a wide range.

Yep, keyboards first. And then maybe a tenor sax player. The keyboardist should be steeped in the blues and gospel, and how how to play a real B3. Even if they're not using one on the gig, there is something about playing a real Hammond that helps make what the great players do make sense. And then you can transfer that to your Nord or whatever. If all you've ever played are synths, you're missing out. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

I love a real Rhodes elec. piano a la D. Fagen/S Dan, it can round out a trio nicely and sort of give it a jazzier quality. Also, sounds similar to the Whirlitser (sp?) piano which is part of the R. Ford band sound on many tunes. Just my two cents Millibobs wrote: | If you were playing a range of material covering Robben-style blues, The Dan, Allmans etc. You would have the core members on guitar, bass and drums.
