Yeah, I know Guthrie. He just leans too much on the doodling/shredding side for my likes, but he is certainly an amazing player. I'm just jealous, really

Rob, I was never into shredding until I was intro'd to Dream Theater and John Petrucci earlier this decade. I've since enjoyed listening to guys like Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Joe Satriani, and others. They (shredders) are knocked for not having soul or feeling, but if you have patience and tolerance and give them serious listens, I think you'll find many redeeming qualities. At least I have. Big difference from listening to Robben, Carleton, and the like, but having opened up my interests and pleasures to more than just a genre or two, I seem to always have something different to listen to as opposed to the same-o same-o. My wife (confused) doesn't know what to make of it, however...
BTW, I mentioned and highly recommend Dream Theater if you're interested in a change, something different. Warning: expect "heavy"! Album: Scenes From A Memory. And, John Petrucci's solo: Suspended Animation. |

There was a young guy in the music store I use last week and he was shredding on a par with Petrucci - I was watching him play and it struck me that he was quite 'switched off' and just going through the motions. Admittedly, the motions were pretty bloody impressive but I'd need some convincing before I could accept that shredders have anything like the feel and connection with the music that Robben, Larry and many others demonstrate. They can do lightening fast runs, make it squeal and even play on 7 strings but after a couple of minutes it all merges into a big messy blur for me - my ears can't keep up.
Like Johnny says, it's a matter of personal taste and there's room for everyone.
If you want someone who bridges the gaps between flat out speed, precision, sensitivity and sheer finesse, I'd put up Alex Lifeson. In fact, if you rummage around amongst the prog/rock fraternity, there are people there who have been doing the 'new age shredding' thing for years!
Off to the supermarket for food with my son now and I'll treat him to a few tracks from Truth. He's not really interested in my kind of music (!) but I live in hope..... |

I agree about the shredders who just go through the motions- I'm done after about 20 seconds...
And, good point about Alex Lifeson, MB. I wish I'd appreciated him 30 years ago as much as I finally do now (only been listening to Rush for about 5-6 years). |

Ha! Let me rephrase: I'm done listening to shredders after about 20 seconds of emotionless motion, by them, the shredders, those who just go through the motions, 20 seconds, them, not me... |

Well, that’s true about 95% of shredders who play scales instead of music.
But guys like Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale, John McLaughlin, Shawn Lane, Guthrie Govan, Richard Hallebek …… can play with soul, slow or fast and still make great enjoyable music. It is great to have perfect technique if one uses it properly. |

Exactly! Which is why I enjoy listening to John Petrucci so much... |
