Hi,

I'm new to the forum. Back in '83, when I was in high school, I attended a clinic where Robben taught and gave a performance. I've been a fan ever since.

I saw on an earlier post, which Daved answered, that Robben purchased a Les Paul at GC. It also looks like he got the neck shaved and the pickups changed.

It got me wondering, since I'm in the market for one myself, what Robben looks for. Is it feel, liveliness, weight? Thanks!

I'm really not sure and, as Robben is a 'nuance' kinda guy, I'm not sure even he could tell you specifically what he looks for in any particular guitar, other than that it "feels and acoustically sounds good" to him.

Guitars he has disliked or avoided for years (such as his Tele) can all of a sudden be the most wonderful in the world one day when he picks up the right one. Robben still does not care much for Teles (and once told me he never ever suspected he would BE a Tele guy) until he picked up the one (and only) that has been his main workhorse guitar for almost a decade now.

I do know that weight, balance (the neck should not drop when it hangs around his neck), and comfortable neck thickness are all deciding factors in his guitar selections.
Size of fret, guitar color, and pickups, though important, are all variable to him and can be changed later if the other factors please him.

Daved, you've worked for several guitarists. Don't you find that to be pretty common? I have several guitars I never thought I'd own - including a Tele - but something about them just "spoke" to me, and I had to have them.

That is the fate of a guitar player, oh well i'd better say a guitar slinger .
Sometimes a guitar is stumbling over u. Unless you're asked to endorse & help up to make up a model out.
