Hi there, I'm curious, is a V7 chord in root position (dominant seventh) to a I chord considered a perfect authentic cadence? As far as I know PAC's are just V to I, but I can't figure out what a V7 to I would be. _________________ "Music is the only thing that you can share with a million million people and you don't lose, you gain. go in you room & do your homework.
A chord is made out of 3 notes :often call a TRIAD( but it ain't no chinese cosanostra) if less this is not a chord this is a doublestop often called DIAD by cheesyguitar geeks.
you fin achord by stacking thirds from a scale i.e C Major = C E G = CMaj=135
now stack more = C E G B Cmaj 7 =1357 Homework : stack until the 13°
so G being the V of C (as I) = GBD = G Maj, then GBDF = G 7 ;
GBDFA = G9
that's why simple rock is fun , with all these maj chords , the trick is to find which one leads to the I.Sweet home lame a ba, luielouie, knockon hell window _________________ http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_music.cfm?bandID=147748 |

Lighten up, I just wasn't sure if a V7 to I counted as a perfect authentic cadence. I'm quite familiar with how chords work, in fact the reason I created this thread was because last night I was doing music theory homework (I'm a junior in highschool, taking a college Music Theory class) and I wasn't sure if V7's were allowed in perfect authentic cadences. I just found out V7 is ok as long as it's not inverted. I didn't need to speech on how chords are created.
This chapter is on dominant sevenths, which is why I'm asking about V7 chords. We had to give the inversion, and follow the V7 chord with a I chord using circle progression and proper 4 part voice leading. _________________ "Music is the only thing that you can share with a million million people and you don't lose, you gain. Haha I don't know whether to apologize for being an ass or say thank you. I did come off a little harsh...my Theory class always stresses me out. I was actually in the class when I wrote that last post, we have computers at our desks. _________________ "Music is the only thing that you can share with a million million people and you don't lose, you gain. I vote "yes."
I believe "authentic" means the cadence (whether plagal or perfect)
ends on the tonic chord.
As long as the other "rules" for a perfect cadence are followed (and I don't need to tell you what THOSE are, do I? ),
I think it qualifies.
And I'm really AMAZED at all the folks who jumped in to answer your question!
It puts a NEW spin on an old joke:
Q: How do you get a guitar player to stop playing?
A: Ask him to play a perfect cadence with a dominant seventh.

Haha you know I was a little surprised as well, I figured "Hey, it's the Robben Ford forum, there's gotta be a couple theory geeks like me on there."
Walk around my town and find the top guitarists in the area, ask them what a seventh chord is made up of and prepare to watch them melt down like a computer asked to compute pi (π) _________________ "Music is the only thing that you can share with a million million people and you don't lose, you gain.
