Did anybody notice that the tune titled "That Road" which appears on Live Jing Chi and Live in Tokyo with Larry Carlton is not even close being the same song? Robben is given song writing credit on each.
Just wondering what's up with that? _________________ Rod |

Yeah, don't know what happened there. I learned them both, though. |

Not even close? They're quite similar, actually. The core phrase is more or less the same though changed in timing a bit.
I assume Robben fiddled around with it after the Jing Chi recording and liked where it went, but saw no need to change it's title. |

Yeah, I'd call it the same song, but heavily modified. I was kind of surprised at how different the version with Carlton was, but the basic theme is still there, so I assume Robben views it as the same tune.
Speaking of "That Road", does anybody know what's happening in terms of chord changes in the solo sections of the Live Jing Chi album?
I transcribed most of the head a few months back, and then got a little stumped by the improv section. Is it just a one-chord vamp, or is there more happening there? |

AlChuck,
Not sure what your hearing, but on the Live Jung Chi the melody (head) is completely different, there's also a distinctive B section with a bass heavy riff. Also, there's solo section that's not on the Tokyo CD with these chords...
Am7/ Em7 /Am7 /Bm7 / F/G / B7 alt /
exact changes not written out
That's my story and I'm sticking to it

In response to
FatTeleTom
Here's the changes
Am7 4x
Em7 4X
Am
Bm7
F/G
B7 alt
Repeat, except in the second chorus replace the Bm7 with a B7#5
I just transcribed Robben's solo, If you're interested in it let me know. It's a GREAT solo IMO

Awesome, thanks L.I.R. Can't wait to get home and try that out.
I've been planning to transcribe the solo, and still hope to find time. But if you're up for posting your transcription, I'm sure lots of folks would appreciate it. It is a *great* solo. |
