Yesterday i learned the loss of Hiram Bullock.
I feel a lot devastated, it's always the same shit around. Some bad asses are still in life doing their destructive taskd and those one never die....
I know anger is not the vibe . How many of you truly appreciate this guy.
The first music i heard from him was al jarreau session, then onegave me 24th street Band, Hell, that was good, & w/CarlaBley that was better, then his solo projects : from all side, give it what u got , and the other one with same rythm section as tiger walk, and the saturday night with sanborn, and the day iasked him to sign a cd, that was surrealistic we had a crack up together.... What do u want me to write Pierre, Well i dunno write fuck off pierre AND HE DID with a huge fun.
This week i mourn one of my best friend, fellow guitarist , and now i've to deal with this..........
I don't want to be an adult , i want to be nursed........ _________________ http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_music.cfm?bandID=147748 |

This is sad news indeed, Blobbie.
I also learned over the weekend that tenor sax man Johnny Griffin passed away at age 80.
And jazz guitarist Joe Beck passed away at age 62.
I had a chance to hear a few cuts from Joe Beck on my local jazz station (WPFW/Pacifica, 89.3, Wash., D.C.) this weekend.
Man, what a hot player he was!
Very fast be-boppish lines, lots of altered chord subs, a chorusy, slightly distorted tone (that I mistook for John McLaughlin.)
Joe Beck and Bullock are both high up on my listening 'To Do' list.
The music lives on.

I was very sad to learn of Hiram's passing. I was a young teenager when the Letterman late night show debuted. Hiram was one of the musicians who opened my ears up to a much wider world of music, beyond the "rock band" setting that had been the staple of my listening up to that point. |

I'm not sure what I voted for, but my decoder ring said 51 - 49 to vote "may be".
Never heard of Hiram- I'll have to check him out... |

I fondly remember him running around on stage at the North Sea Jazz Festival, playing with David Sanborn in the eighties.
David would stand still on stage playing his sax, and Hiram Would run around
and go into the audience, playing his ass off; and a good time was had by all.
I also remember buying his first solo record (vinyl) called From All Sides, and being pleasantly surprised that it contained Cactus by Don Grolnick; one of my favourite tunes at that time, which I started to play with the band I was in.
A great player with lots of good energy and charisma.

I have a couple of videos that I taped from David Sanborn's late night show. I have Hiram playing with Eric Clapton and Robert Cray and also Hiram playing with SRV. He will definitely be missed.

Wow, this Hiram Bullock fella is one bad-ass mofo, and it only took 30 seconds or less of watching a video to realize that. I'm surprized and disappointed that I've never heard of him... |

Yeah Hiram was great. I saw him with Marcus Miller a few years ago (I think with David Sanborn too, but I'm not too sure about that one), and he was really a great player and stage act.
Really a great loss. |

His "Way Kool" album was one that got me through a lot of late nights when I was at college in the early 90s. Also one of very few albums/artists that I ever bothered to pinch ideas from! I could listen to the "Dear Prudence" solo a million times (I probably have!) and not get sick of it. Beautiful lines.
Paul Schaffer and Dave had some nice words to say about him on Letterman the other night too.
Still very sad. _________________ because I rock, and that's important. |

I loved his solo projects , givit what u got, from all sides, way kool.
I really enjoy funk music and these where totaly funky for me . In way kool in my humble opinion the drummer is still nasty. There is some killer snare sounds in way kool. Play it loud and then you become like a fool.
Being myself in can't behave. I was sure one can't get so energized just coz it's a studio session. but I was sad learning all his health problems.
Weird about all is that kind of RIP came 3 three weeks ago , then of all a sudden it increases. Ah , i am getting older and the fatal issue is notso far/
Bummer i was just a crazy Hendrix addict whrn i got the chance to see joe beck live in 1976 , unfortunately my ears was stuck on basic pentatonic. Anyway i think you cannot get out such an experiencewithout benefit. SO i am glad to say RIP Mr Beck. _________________ http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_music.cfm?bandID=147748 |

Bad news, but I feared it.
Just ten days before his death, I had talken with a bass player who played a lot with Hiram in the last years and, among other things, I asked him news about Hiram.
He told me he was struggling against a throat cancer. That, unfortunately, has won.
Very good guitar player, very versatile, able to play many genres.
I had seen him in concert a lot of times, in different contexts, always showing his value and feeling comfortable.
