I was just wondering, after seeing RF in Newcastle UK last month, if he ever still plays the sax. Does anyone know? Listening to him that night I was struck again with how horn-like his lines can be. I understand he started out on sax when he was a boy, so maybe he still picks it up from time to time at home?
It was a great gig by the way. Band gelled better than any I've seen him with before, for my ears. Big TC has a hell of a punch there, but very supple with it too. _________________ 'Think of a note, then don't play it' - Miles Davis on the art of improvisation. I thought this an interesting question myself, to which I did not know the answer, so I asked him today while going over some tour biz with him in his room.
He says no, he hasn't touched the intsrument in many years and never plays it at all anymore. _________________ B C-ing U!

There are few recordings of Robben on sax if you are interested in what he sounded like. My favorite track is "Blue Stu" from Charlie Musslewhite's Takin' My Time on Arhoolie. He also plays sax on Musslewhite's Lousiana Fog. My copies are on LP. I don't know how available these recordings are on CD.
Sunrise is a CD collection of 1972 recordings that features Robben's sax on Miles' "Eighty One". |

Robben plays a little sax on the latest Jimmy Witherspoon release that came out a couple of weeks ago. Great performance so pick it up if you can. _________________ "Somebody's got to make some music around here." - Robben Ford |
