I just picked up The Art of the Blues Guitar DVD - love it - but I have what I suspect is the first of many questions (as will be obvious I'm pretty light on music theory).

My question is, why are only G, C, and F major triads used in examples 2, 3, and 4? Is it because they are the I, IV, and V chords for C?

thanks

robl, I can't answer your questions, but I noticed you're from Andover, MA, "right down the street from me". Interested in jamming?

The answer would be yes.

I agree--I think the answer is yes, it's because they are the I, IV, and V triads. Or, put another way, it is that they are the major triads in the key.

I think the simplicity of it is really the point--it's an idea that is easy to remember and apply, yet can produce surprisingly musical results.

Might be worth exploring the minor triads as well (Dm, Em, Am)?

Maybe my question will be a little too late for this subject but in the examples 2,3 and 4, playing the 3 same chords C, F, G, you use them over a G7 on example 2, over a C on example 3 and over a Dm on example 4. Could someone explain me why please???

At that point, I think that Robben looks at the G7 as the Mixolydian mode.
If you build chords on each degree of this mode you will get the following chords (in G Mixolydian) :
G7
Am7
Bm7b5
CMaj7
Dm7
Em7
FMaj7

So you still get the three major triads C, F and G, and obviously you can also use them on each of the chords derived from this mode (such as C or Dm, but you could play them over Em for instance).

Yes I agree with you Pierrel but there is still something I don't understand. Why does example 2 sound so good over a G7, why does example 3 sound so good over C, and why does example 4 sound so good over Dm. You use the 3 same chords C, F, G!!!! Is it the way they are ranked?
