Thanks Devin, those videos are great.
Does anyone know if Robben ever recorded "Crosscut Saw" ?
The song appears on several Albert King albums as well as Eric Clapton's 1983 release. I didn't find Crosscut Saw on any RF or The Ford Blues Band CDs or LPs in my collection. "R.G. Ford" is listed as the author/composer of the song, but I didn't find any other songs written by this person. Is R.G. Ford a one hit wonder? _________________ Travelling by train of thought |

Wow, the 5 or 6 times I have been able to his shows I've never seen him move so much. Maybe as he has gotten older he's mellowed out a little. Nice to see him so involved physcialy with the music. I saw Eric Clapton a few years back, he never even said hello to the Sacramento crowd and never moved much at all. In fact it was one of the worst concerts I have ever been to. He was so boring to watch, more like, let me get this over collect my money and I am out of here. In fact Billy Preston was playing keys and stole the show. He jumped over his keys danced all over the stage and Eric stood in the back and let him steal the show. It was great to see him so into his music, where Eric well just didnt seem very into the whole deal. So its nice to see Robin bust a move. |

Clapton has never been one to move around a lot when he plays. He didn't when he was a youngster with the Yardbirds. As Jack Bruce said at the Cream Reunion, they don't dance around , they let the music speak for itself. I saw Clapton on that same tour that you did, I think. It was in Memphis and Billy Preston wasn't there. Clapton still didn't talk a lot, but he did acknowledge the audience, and his guitar talked enough for both of them.

When I saw him at The Mint a couple of months ago I was surprised to see how active he was. He seemed to beat the shit out of his guitar. It was great to see him with so much energy. _________________ "Somebody's got to make some music around here." - Robben Ford |

yeah roadwarrior, funny you posed that question,
I was studying that song last week and trying to
figure out who RG Ford was. Spent a half hour doing
google searches. Never did figure out who he/she was/is.
Still curious myself. Being an old woodsman it's the perfect
song for me.
Just call me woodcuttin sam.
I just love youtube, better than normal tv

I have found references to a "Tony Hollins" (followed by question marks) as the composer of "Crosscut Saw Blues". I'm not even sure if it is the same song (I know there is another "Crosscut Saw" by noted english bottleneck guitar player Tony McPhee & the Groundhogs from their early 70's album of the same name... "'Cause I'm a crosscut saw and I'm gonna cut you down to size someday"... an album and song, BTW, that I love) but the references I've found seem to indicate that it is. Considering the vagueness of what is known about Tony, perhaps he may be the same person as this R.G. Ford?
Google "Tony Hollins" and you will find a little more info and even a UK import that has some of his songs on it ("Married Woman Blues", "Crawling King Snake"', "Crosscut Saw Blues").
=======================
Tony Hollins
Genre: Rock
Instruments: Vocals, Guitar
Born:
1900 in Clarksdale, Mississippi
Died:
1959 in Chicago
Biography:
Cited as a major influence by no less than John Lee Hooker, Delta blues singer/guitarist Tony Hollins was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi around the turn of the century. Few details are known of Hollins' life; he cut his first recordings for OKeh in 1941, with his fluid, insistent performance of "Crawlin' King Snake" serving as the blueprint for Hooker's own later rendition. His "Traveling Man Blues" was also later appropriated by Hooker for his "When My Wife Quit Me"; clearly admired by his peers, Hollins never caught on as a popular favorite, and after another session in 1951, he gradually drifted out of music, focusing instead on his day job as a barber. He died in Chicago in 1959. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Thanks Road Warrior,
A lot of this material happened before I was born,
thank goodness for the internet cause this info used
to be so hard to find. However, I find I've been
watching youtube a bit too much and not playin my
harp like a good boy.
Regards,

That was great.
I wonder if he was using his Dumble. I think he was living in New York around that time. I would love to see the whole show or been at that show. Robben most likely sat in with the band. The audience I'm sure got a real treat. There was for most likely some great playing in and out of the commercials.

Ok, my take on the Letterman Show video: youth, Elvis, and coffee.
Youth- Robben is obviously a fair amount younger then than he is now.
Elvis- Robben probably watched an Elvis video (late 50s/early 60s) within 24 hours of the show's taping.
Coffee- Robben must've had a double Costa Rican or two the morning of the taping. Note: show tapings are usually during the late mornings and afternoons, not 11:30 PM+.
Put those 3 factors together, and you've got one hopping Robben Ford!
Loved those shoes too, right Elizabeth?! |

Just found this, makes me wonder why they used Andy Just instead of
Mark Ford on the Bloomfield/Butterfield tribute album.
Andy is maybe a bit better in some respects but his playing on
this song was weak compared to what I hear Mark doing.
But then again maybe Mark didn't want to do the tour after all.
I tried to ask Robben what Mark was up to at Youshi's and he
didn't want to talk about his brother. Oh well.
When I went to see them at Moes in Santa Cruz neither Andy or Mark was
there. I was kinda bummed. Volker is good but the Ford Brothers band
aways had a harp player, that was the sound.
I miss the way those 2 used to play off each other.
One of the best Harp/Guitar combos.

I am totally up to your point , i would have been bummed not to see an harp player interacting. I've been lucky enough to see the Ford Blues Band w/ Mark &robben as a guest. Then the Bloomfield tribute with Andy Just.
For my very taste i 'm hooked with Mark Ford . Not only the way he interacts with Robben when Robben is there , but it's my taste , the way he plays.THAT doen't mean that i was not jaw dropping when i saw Andy. _________________ http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_music.cfm?bandID=147748 |
