For those who must know, Robben looked uber casual in black boots, black jeans, and a dark olive t-shirt with matching hat. Enough with the fashion report.

They played some songs from the Truth, Tiger Walk, and Supernatural CD's. I really enjoyed the more straight up blues numbers mixed in like Spoonful and Loving Cup. Cannonball Shuffle was great too.

Now for the gear heads. Robben played his Telecaster and the Sakashta guitar. The Sakashta was the main guitar, but he played the Telecaser more as the night moved forward. Signal chain was volume pedal, wah, to the amps. He had a Twin Reverb and the Dumble amp head. Both were miked up. Wish I had asked Daved what mics were used. A tech 21 midi mouse controlled the rack mounted delay. I adore the sound of that Telecaster. But, I'm betting the real magic is the player.

Robben really has the four T's. Touch, tone, taste, and the technique to back it all up. His singing voice is underrated. If you can't tell by now, I really enjoyed the show. If I wasn't working Thursday you would see me at the Portland show.

Thanks go out to the Halfshell committee for choosing an artist of Robben's caliber.

Onward ever - backward never,

Larry

The tune "Freedom" was a highlight for me. I forgot to mention Toss Panos and Dan Lutz. Hope I got their names correct. The musical interplay was superb. Those lucky enought to attend the Portland show are in for a treat.

Saw him with Toss and Travis Carlton on bass at the Independent in San Francisco in early April, which is documented on the forthcoming live CD (releasing August 11). It was a great show, Robben was in top form, but for me the real surprise and highlight of the evening was just how superb of a drummer Toss Panos is. Just a complete knockout.
