Went to see Robben last night at the Jazz Cafe in London, the fifth performance i have seen of Robben and the boys.
Upon arrival there was a mix up with my ticket allocations but was soon sorted out thankfully. Had the sinking feeling that i wouldn't be eating in the restaurant, so I am eternally grateful to the Jazz Cafe staff for sorting me out in the end.
Apparently See Tickets had major issues with the re-scheduling and are having to compensate the Jazz Cafe financially. The result was me arriving (and maybe others) very nearly not having a table upstairs.
But anyway, all that aside, I have to say that Robben and the boys were on fire, and as ever, i left another live performance with a smile on my face, in fact i was smiling for most of the show and completely mesmerized.
He mentioned the release of a new album in August (the US at least, not sure about Europe release date) and they played a few new ones. They also played a cover of the Howling Wolf "Spoonful" and with Robben's added flavor to it, sounded fantastic!!!
Really looking forward to the new release and seeing the live recorded shows they did this year!
All in all money well spent, but a real pity they didn't play in my home town of Exeter, hopefully next year.

I was there too. I also had trouble with my ticket. Eventually I paid again just to get in as it was about 5 mins before show time. To their credit, the staff eventually found my ticket, found me in the club and gave me my money back for the second ticket. My ticket was bought through Ticketmaster so, cant comment on whether the ticket companies screwed up or the venue itself....
Anyhow..the show. It was great! The current band of Travis Carlton (Bass - Larry's Carltons son) and Toss Panos (Drums) is one of the best since the Blue Line. Much of the material from Truth played on the night had a much more funky swing and dynamic range than the studio performances from the CD. I have access to an AUD Reording of the show and have listened to it a few times today. Robben himself needed a few numbers to warm up and he commented on how the sound changed from soundcheck to stage time...obviously due to the room now being filled with people. While he was still great, he did not seem entirely "clicked in" until the second half.
Guitars - Played a Les Paul most of the night with obvious wear on the edge under his right arm. At first I thought it was a Gold Top. As they night wore on I began to think it was maybe a very faded sunburst? I'm sure someone on this board will know the exact guitar. He also had his usual tele with maple neck. For one or two he used the guitar from the cover of Truth.
New CD is out in the US on August 11th. It's called "Soul on Ten"
Robben was raving about how they had just done four great shows in San Francisco and that he hoped we "enjoy it"? Does this mean a live release may be imminent?
They did 2 blues tunes, Robben described one as a cross between Elmore James "Please Set A Date" and Jimmy Reeds "You Dont Have To Go". The other was "Spoonful". These were highlights for me.

A slow bluesy tune in A with Robben's great chord voicing, lots of key changes. Extended soloing...some moments very Larry Carlton sounding.

9. There'll Never Another You
10. Moonchild Blues - Travis had a nice bass solo here.
11. Supernatural. This opened up into an amazing spacey, Jerry Garcia-esque jam that ended gently like watching the sun setting in the pacific.

I went last night - similar setlist, I thought the slow jam section of the new track was reminiscent of the jam section at the end of Too Rolling Stoned by Robin Trower. This band are superb, the best gig I saw was at the Stables in Milton Keynes. Shame they didn't come back to sign things, most people left immediately.
It was Larry Carlton's 57 Goldtop he was using, he had this the time I saw him at the Mean Fiddler in Charing Cross Road. Usual 1960 Tele and NouPaul as before, Dunlop Crybaby into Zendrive then Silverface Twin and BF Super Reverb (a reissue?). I'm sure also it was Rick Wheeler (Larry Carlton's guitar tech) looking after the instruments last night too - he also did the band intro. I also have access to a reasonable quality audio...
I was getting worried at 2045 as there were not that many people there but it did fill up more, still no way as busy as the last ones at the JC though.
