|
|
Hello, I am hoping that someone out there can help me.
I have just purchased a Yamaha T-50c Soldano designed 1x12 combo. I am trying to figure out which tubes would be the best to install as the existing ones are quite old (and I don't know the history). The power amp section takes 2 x 6L6GC's and the preamp takes 7 x 12AX7's. I am looking to coax those Robben Ford-Scott Henderson type tones out of this amp and not a really high gain sound. This amp is generally thought of as a "high gain" specialist, but I would love to "tame" it with the proper tubes if that is in fact possible. Maybe a speaker swap as well.
Thank you in advance for your thoughts! |

You can try to tame it by using the following tubes in the V1 position :
- 5751 (70% of gain compared to a 12AX7)
- 12AT7 (60%)
- 12AY7 (45%)
As for the speaker, you can try a Celestion G12-65, an Eminence RWB, or a Tone Tubby according to your budget. |

Thank you for the information. What are your thoughts on a Celestion Vintage 30 in there? |

Not a bad speaker, but definitely not recommended if you are seeking Scott Henderson or Robben Ford type of tones. It's more of a rock speaker. |

To be clear, I have neved used Tone Tubbys myself (whereas I own or have owned G12-65 and RWB speakers) , I know they are used by some players like Carlos Santana or Jimmy Herring for their smooth tone, I think that's the hemp cone alnico model. |
