Anyone know which guitars Ford is using on the Various Jing Chi albums and tunes. I'm not having much luck searching for this info. I know there are Tele's and LP's (and some Bakers...man those are ugly guitars IMO) involved but I'm interested in models and PUP's and the usual gearhead stuff.

On another note...if anyone has an Esprit they'd like to sell...?

On the live recording there are pics of Robben with telecaster, Baker and the Les Paul. I think I have seen pics on the net from Jing Chi gigs with LP and Tele, and for some reason, always thought these two were the main JC guitars. Also, on one of the other recordings there is a pic of him playing the Epiphone. I'm pretty sure the Tele ('60) and LP ('54 or '55) both are stock with everything original including pickups.

Thanks Phil...always wondered which guitars were behind that tone. I know about the fingers...but knowing about the gear is cool. That is about the fattest tone I've ever heard out of a Tele...I guess a $20K Dumble doesn't hurt.

It's not just the Dumble. I heard Robben get the same fat tone with the Tele and a Fender Twin.

I know. I used to go see him at Mikel's in NYC very often in the late 80's. I think he was playing through a Fender, but can't remember. I know I loved that Fender Robben Ford he used to play. If you're good, your sound will be in whatever you play through. So...if you are playing through a Dumble...you're wasting your money...send it to me and I'll save you the embarrassment of appearing to have overspent.

When I saw Jing Chi at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA (the week of the live recording), Robben played the Tele and a Baker. and maybe he had a Les Paul too (it's been almost eight years since that show... yipes...)

I was at 3 of the first 4 Jing Chi live shows. Robben played through his Black (now tan) Dumble all night. The guitars were his White Tele and Baker that was shaped just like a Les Paul.

Here's my Photos from the gig and the clinic which was a couple days before.

That must have been an earlier Jing Chi tour, maybe around the time of the first CD? The show I saw was in mid-December 2002, about a week after I went to Robben's clinic in Ojai.

If memory serves, that model was the Baker Crucible - and Robben's is the only one I've ever seen in the hands of a guitarist!

I disagree with this statement - it may be a fat tone but its no way "the same fat tone"

he used Dumbles btw for lead tones on the studio album

thanks

Agreed that the Dumble/Robben combo is a perfect match.
Peace, Brother.
