100 Years of Jazz Guitar... and not one female guitarist
Over the weekend, I bought the new 4-CD box set "Progressions: 100 Years of Jazz Guitar". I know so little about jazz and feel like most of the books and box sets I've looked at in the past are intimidating to a novice fan and don't reach out to the interests of a general music lover.
This box set is different. It's a perfect introduction to all the different styles of jazz guitar. It's a crash course in jazz history from 1906 to 2001. The CDs include one significant recording (characteristic of the artist's style) from each of the 78 jazz guitar legends featured. The music was taken from 33 different record labels, and includes tracks from a few artists, such as Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana, who I hadn't really thought of as jazz legends.
The box set also includes a beautiful 148-page book with short biographical essays and photographs of each featured artist. Toward the back of the book, 25 great guitarists reveal their own jazz guitar heros.
I am surprised there's not one female jazz guitarist included in this 100 year definitive collection of jazz guitar, or interviewed for the section on jazz guitar heros. Does anyone else find this strange _________________ Travelling by train of thought |

Just curious, but is Gabor Szabo included in this box set?
~JohnnyZ~ a.k.a. John Szabo
P.S. RoadWarrior, think about the era timeframe this box set covers. There were certainly many women jazz greats, but the 1st two-thirds of the 20th century didn't highlight them with only a few, literally, exceptions... _________________ Soul on Eleven |

Yes, Gabor Szabo plays Gypsy Queen (1966). _________________ Travelling by train of thought |

FordFan, Thanks for the links !
Although many of the artists included in this set were pure to the jazz genre, they did include male cross-over artists such as Hendrix and Santana. I wonder if they considered Joni Mitchell at all ? Any other suggestions ? _________________ Travelling by train of thought |
