As I am a newbie (I have known of him, but I have really only been listening for about a year and a half), would someone care to enlighten me as to where I can get information about such things as Robben's history as a player, what bands/artists he has played with, vital stats. I mean if I'm going to have a new hero I would like to know all I can about him. Thanks in advance. _________________ If I ever make the music in my head become realized on my guitar, I will be amazing. |

Cool that you are here. Welcome. If you browse around the history on this board I think you will find more information that you ever expected, from discographies, to obscure sessions Robben has been on, and equipment settings to what shoes he wore to a particular show. I played for more than 35 years before becoming aware of Robben. Better late than never _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Just to follow up: Anyone that is a guitar player too, would you care to comment on how Robben's playing has affected you? _________________ If I ever make the music in my head become realized on my guitar, I will be amazing. |

I hate him He got such a great tone, that is NOT fair. It has also led me to a expensive taste in amps and guitars.
I also more aware of how to use my fingers, and pick, to alter the tone, BUT, you need great amps to get the most out of that. When it comes to phrasing i love Robben, but i try to learn more from Miles and Coltrane and other Jazz guys as well as all the great old bluesmen, and of course Sinatras singing.

There in lies one of my worst problems: I like to study jazz piano players for influence instead of single note players. I just have begun to explore the world of three and four comping with relation to using sevenths. I have played for nearly 24 years, but most of it was spent as a bass player, so my actually abilities on guitar were limited until the last 5 years or so. I would love to be able to comprehend more chords wise, as that is by far the area that I least versed in. Having spent time in college studying theory as a horn player, most of it is in relation to the single note players. Harmonic theory just complete has eluded me to this point. But, I am giving chase. My signature line says it all. _________________ If I ever make the music in my head become realized on my guitar, I will be amazing. |

You've probably already done so but you must check out his site www.robbenford.com if you haven't.

Robben told us at his August clinic that when he learned chords, that's when everything turned around for him. That's when his musical world opened up.
He also recommended an excellent book called Zen Guitar. (The author died recently) The book won't tell you one thing about quitar technique or anything of that nature but it sure makes me want to play.
Those are just a couple of things I've gotten from RF.

The chord books he always references are the Micky Baker jazz books. They've been around a long time and are mostly excersizes in movement. Not very thick with paper, but take years to go through. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

What an excellent book! It is so wild to read that Robben is into this book. Highly recommended. When I was active leading a band, I would buy any new members copies of this so that understood the spiritual side of playing. |
