Not so much theory related, but a philisophical issue worthy of discussion for those that do the 9 to 5 thing and also play music...
How do you balance the demands of full time work, music (also full time in some cases), relationships, kids (if applicable) etc etc?
I'm very fortunate in that most of my music work these days involves working with my wife's band. This is about a 3 gig per week commitment, up to 6 per week sometimes though. Also a full time job for her, so all the admin work, accounts, promo work etc is taken care of while I'm at work. That just leaves me to play guitar and carry heavy stuff.
In relationship terms, this works quite well, as long as I keep the vocal faders up anyway .
However, I'm acutely aware that with the demands of managing a $3M business during the day, I simply could not do this anymore if not for the fact that I get to work with my partner after hours and the fact that she does all the hard yards work-wise.
The only thing I worry about is that, job wise, there's always the possibilty of a perception problem resulting from being so busy after hours. Fortunately, I manage to stay on top of my game at work, and I steer away from being too busy after hours (there IS a limit!), so I manage this quite well. Would be interested to know whether anyone else has this problem though.
Apart from that, both band and business run well, we're still married and I still get to stay sane by playing music. No kids either - cats are lower maintenance.
So, would be interested to hear other thoughts on this issue. It's a hard balancing act sometimes and I'd be interested to see how others do it.
