Hiya! First post from me in Birmingham (England). Luvly site.
Yeah! three tracks broadcast on Paul Jones' BBC Radio 2 blues programme -
"Keep On Running" (Spencer Davis song, Robben CD title track)
Blistering instrumental (forgot title!)
"Over My Head"
BTW, I'm sure they were BBC session recordings, not from any live gig.
Anyone know if Robben is playing in England this year??
Coo, really hot session!
See ya! _________________ Stay Cool Geetar Luvvers.

Well, if you mean this year = 2004 not sure, however it sounds like you missed the latest tour which finished up in late Nov, early Dec 2003 where Robben and the band completely wowed the UK with gigs in London, Southampton, Newcastle, Manchester etc
Keep watching the skys - or this list for news about all things Robben this year |

If you'd like to hear the show, here's a link to the BBC website where it's hosted:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/jones/
It's available until next Thursday.
With regard to the broadcast, I have to say that although the music was excellent, I was expecting an interview, as Paul Jones has done in the past with guest bands\artists. I must say i was really disappointed that there was no interview or any interactivity with the band , and the 3 tunes were not in a row...
The instrumental was Cannonball ( a tribute to freddy King).
No badge, no interview , nothing.....
Great takes anyway . Swingin' Malach. Great sound too the bass were There.
Do they know how to make a sound at BBC ? |

Leave it to the rookie to simply be excited to hear some "live" Robben. Even without the support of a full production, i.e. keys, more horns, Robben is so amazing at filling up the void with his chord voicings. I am still in awe. Great stuff and worth the listen! _________________ If I ever make the music in my head become realized on my guitar, I will be amazing. |

Hi All,
just had a reply to an email I sent to the BBC Radio2 Paul Jones Show - asking why song number 4 was not broadcast last week ?
----------------------
Simon
Thank you for your message.
Indeed, Robben did record four numbers and the fourth one will be
transmitted later in the year.
Regards
Richard Masters
Senior Producer, BBC Radio 2
Paul Jones R & B Show
-------------------
I have since replied to this, asking 'when' it will happen, and also if an interview took place, and if so when/will this also be broadcast.
I posted the link toour discussion site and who knows maybe we may get a direct response

latest update -
---------------------------------------
Simon
We don't have a date yet - however, Paul will trail it.
Only when a session is done 'live' do we have interviews with the
artists. Robben's session was recorded when Paul was not available,
hence no interview, unfortunately.

so keep listening to the show !, if I get any further updates I will post them
Cheers

Does anybody know which amps Robben used to record these sessions? Because they don't sound as thick for some reason. It might just be the sound of a computer playing a recorded radio show, but the sound just doesn't seem to be the same as his usual recorded sound. _________________ If I ever make the music in my head become realized on my guitar, I will be amazing. |

Curious, must be miking or production as even if he didn't bring the Dumble combo, the Banzai usually sounds even thicker than the Dumbles do. And Olaf comfirms that mine is on it's way! Review soon. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

The session was recorded at the Birmingham BBC studios.
I went in and put together our entire road setup, Dumble, GK bass rig, and Toss's drumkit.
I don't know all the reasons, but shows recorded live for radio & TV are notorious for their bad quality. Usually, these sessions can be a tour sound engineer's nightmare, as they are rarely allowed to actually operate the sound board, but are usually allowed to hang around and 'advise', if they want to.
This means you, as the listener, are at the mercy of a in-house engineer who often has never even heard of the artist he is mixing, much less have any familiarity with what the artist does or is supposed to sound like. _________________ B C-ing U!

Daved,
I'm curious, when you go into a venue, do you have a say on mike selection and placement? Do you carry your own mikes? I'm thinking of that huge road case Eric Johnson uses with all the mikes pre-attached. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

well, in my opinion, the 'original' broadcast sounded fine, possibly a little bit thin, however not enough to spoil the performance, however if you are listening over the web with a 'low xx kbs' level eg less than 65 then it will sound poor anyway.
the only good thing about this facility is that you can get to hear a show from another country/region via the net |
