I do not own many, but I would say obviously Robben Ford's "The blues and beyond", and Scott Henderson's "Jazz Fusion" and "Melodic Phrasing". I also liked Eric Johnson's "Total electric Guitar". |

I totally agree with the Scott Henderson videos!
"Jazz Fusion" - Scott takes you through what scales you can play over different chords.
"Melodic Phrasing" - this one focuses on phrasing using grammar as a metaphor for improvisation. All guitarist should watch this one! As a group I think guitarists are very weak at developing melodic ideas.....we wank on licks way too much.
Plus Scott is a real entertaining guy!! Moster player even 10 years ago! _________________ www.hendersounds.com

Apologies for getting in late on this thread...I agree whole heartedly that guitarists tend to be lick driven-guilty as charged. I stopped playing for over a decade. Prior to that I'd played in big band setting in college and had become more "theory driven" even when playing rock or blues...upon restarting, I fell right back into copying licks and getting into nothing but the same ruts I was in when I was a kid starting out...licks, IMHO are worse than "connecting the dots" guitar playing...I see so many guys who can play their butts of but have no clue how what they play relates to cords or even the key signature. I temporarily solved that problem by forcing myself to us an old Cakewalk/Jammer program. I make myself enter the cords for any song I'm going to solo over...type out the cord chart, time signature...it's not a perfect system and may not work for everyone, but it forces me to think of music instead of just licks or just blowing through changes instead of playing to them.
PS. I have both Robben Ford DVDs, and they are a very cool insight into how he thinks about what he plays against cords...one crackup was on the Blues and Beyond video where he admits he played Revelation by ear and figured out the cords later...he can drive in reverse easily too. _________________ I'll be spending way too much time here... |

My top favs that have helped me the most and are what I consider to be "the best" are:
Scott Henderson's two REH vids...
Don Mock's - "Blues from rock to jazz" and "Jazz guitar rhythm chops" videos
John Scofield - "On Improvisation"
Robben Ford "The blues and beyond"
Eric Johnson "The fine art of guitar" (both vids)
Frank Gambale "Chopbuilder" and "Modes no more mystery"
Joe Pass - "An evening with Joe Pass"
There a John Abercrombie video I have too...don't remember the name...but it's awesome....talks about about jazz phrasing and ideas
Finally....for anyone wanting to learn how to swing and understand jazz rhythm...THE #1 best video is David Liebman's "Understanding Jazz Rhythm: The concept of swing".....Hands down, the video that helped me see the light... _________________ http://www.johnredden.com |

although not a "guitar" video, I learnt a whole lot from this Patitucci video, he talks much about improvisation, the right scale for chords and getting to know each chord/scale as a "sound".
