I just picked up "The Guitarist Book Of Blues" published by the folks at Guitarist Magazine (Future Publishing) in the UK.
It's a collection of interviews that have appeared in the magazine -- some very old. (Also has a CD and TAB with Robben Ford doing Talk To Your Daughter"). The Robben Ford interview is not dated by must be from right after release of "Talk To Your Daughter" album in the '80s.
I've taked a hunk of the center of this old Robben Ford interview and typed it out to keep context -- I wouldn't want to take thoughts out of context. Several things I found of interest and thought you might also.
Question: Did you listen to the musicians per se, rather than particularly the guitarist?
Answer: Yeah, I never paid much attention to the guitarist in the jazz world. For me, guitar is a blues instrument – in terms of jazz and the more sophisticated hybrids – I like the saxophone.
Saxophone was actually my first instrument – I actually played some on Charlie Musselwhite’s record – but there was an album that was released by a company that I was sadly attached to. It was called Schizophrenic, and it was as a soundtrack to a pornographic film. It was never intended to be a record and after I hooked up with people like Joni Mitchell the people that owned the tapes released it as an album. So it was a big rip-off. I was so embarrassed. I was like 20 or 21 when the music was recorded so I was really shocked when someone walked in and said: “Hey Robben, I’ve got your new album.” I said, “What album?” It was like four years later.
Question: Talk To Your Daughter is a mixer bag of music. It seems to go from the straight ahead blues to piano oriented boogies and there’s the – dare I say it – Larry Carlton type track, Nothing But The Blues.
Answer: Larry Carlton like?
Question: In terms of sound and approach.
Answer: Well that’s how he got his sound – from me.
Question: I was going to ask who’d been listening to whom ……so he listened to you?
Answer: Yeah.
Question: But people think it’s the other way round.
Answer: Yeah, sure. You know he got out there before I did, so it’s quite common for people to think that I was influenced by Larry Carlton, but it’s much more the other way around. I don’t even like to say that – it’s mildly embarrassing – but it’s true. |

Hi , i never read this stuff , but the porno is true along with the deeep interaction they had as young wild musicians sharing the love of electric guitar & blues idioma.
The guy i told before, the one who made me listen R.Ford in 1984, he told me about this RIP OFF. He told me too that even with the whole repect he have for Carlton he coudn't understand why Robben stood in an other area.

When I get home from work tonight, I'm going to take some flowers home for my wife, dim the lights, put some candles out, open a bottle of champagne and put on Schizophrenic...

Does the article mention the name of the film? I would like to add it to my Robben Ford collection.

This was such a cool thread, why did it stop
Incidently, I have just got my 335 copy and have been listening to Larry Carlton a lot to get that hollow bluesy feeling
I remember that I started listening to Larry around 1981 and then I heard Robben (I think it was "Hideway" with D.Sanborn, M.Miller) and thought: "Hey, this guy (Robben) sounds like Larry but he's got more balls!"
I don't know if this has anything to with the modalities of choosing a porn soundtrack....

Of course. The first thing I ever heard of Larry's was "You Gotta Get it While you Can". I heard it on the radio (those where the times...) and I thought. "who the hell is this guy! Wow!" Later on in life, as I matured, I realised that the guitar part was speeded up in the studio! Oh Larry.....
Anyhow, I like that LP (no CDs at the time), it was the first time he played a Strat. I like Friends and On Solid Ground and Last Nite. I am listening to Deep Into It now. Larry is solid no?2 in my books, being slightly wishy-washy compared to Robben.
Robben, although he appears to be meak and mild as a person, is a real animal when it comes to playing. I was (pleasantly) surprised to see what kind of person Robben is. I was expecting someone more agressive (juvenile misconceptions of mine.... ).
One good point about Larry is that he's a guitarist, he knows it and takes pride in it.
