Yoshi's, last night, Mike Stern, Victor Wooten, Dave Weckl. Most amazing display of musicianship I've seen in a long time. They were having a blast too. Smiles all around. Mike had written new stuff (as usual) and they were really tight on it. Much more so that the last time when Victor first hooked up with Stern and Chambers. Weckl doesn't "take it to the basement" the way Dennis does but his versatillity was perfect for this show. Whether latin, soft brushwork, straight swing, or with Victor showing the way, deep funk, Dave had it covered. And Victor, what can you say. If you haven't seen this guy live, you need to. He does totally unreasonable things with a bass guitar. Imagine Jennifer Batten using her two handed tapping technique to play both parts of a Segovia Scarlatti duet. Now translate that to four strings and a 32" scale. At one point that's what we were treated to. And Mike was Mike, all over the place. What a treat.
