I am listening to Robben's version of Red Rooster from the "Sunrise" LP.

He has such a mellow, nasal semiacoustic sound. Also, the soloing is pretty "bop"-ish with a lot of cromatic passages. Beautiful.:D

These was pre Esprit, pre Dumble, pre TC era. Does anyone know what guitar and amp was he using at the time?

I recall from his instructional video that historically he played Gretch>L5>S400>335>Strat>Esprit.

This should have been somewhere between the L5 and 335.

Help anyone?

Marin,

I vote for the L5. I you have the early live recordings with Jimmie Witherspoon, you will see a very youn Robben on the back-picture with this guitar. Sounds teh same to me!

Yeah, Probably the L5 or Super 400. That really midrangy sound of a distorted archtop. Now for the amp, candidates would be a cranked Super, Boogie or transistor Yamaha. Based on the distortion I would actualy vote for the Yamaha. Anybody around here back then?
