Daved,
Hello, I'm new here, so if this topic has already been discussed, sorry. I've seen a picture of Robben apparently using a Dr. Z Z-Best 2x12 cabinet -- the pic is on the Dr. Z Website. Does he routinely use this cabinet and has he tried Doc Z amps (I know this is perhaps a bit of blasphemy, sorry Dumble fans)? If so, what was his reaction? Does the cabinet he's using have the stock celestions that Dr. Z loaded?
Also, I just purchased the Keep On Running CD last night -- and I must say that Robben's guitar is mixed very well. Not that it was bad in previous recordings, it's just fatter and more out front on this one, IMO -- and that's good.

Thanks for the info. Even though Robben didn't specifically credit the Z-Best, he was happy with his rig that gig -- so I'll take that as a thumb's up on the cabinet.

Does anyone use a Dr Z amp (or know anyone who does)? I watched a documentary on Steve Earle the other night (very good, by the way) and in several of the live segments his guitar player was running through a Dr Z. Cool sound. Just wondering out loud here... |

The ones I've seen aren't channel switching and not very high gain. More for traditional kinds of stuff. They tend to want to have the output pushed a bit so they are kind of one trick ponies (one setting, one volume level). But the trick is very good. Very articulate and with a nice progressive break up. Interestingly, for such a clear amp, they don't seem to be difficult to play through. That is, I've seen some pretty average players (from a tone production standpoint) using these, and they still get a good sound compared to other amps I've heard them playing. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Hey Quoolmon
I can shed a little light on this. The article Kirk95 points to was a post I did on the PRS Forum after spending a bit of time with Robben and his gang when they played in Montgomery, AL. Robben does not routinely use nor endorse Dr Z or his cabinets. The cabinet in question is my personal cab that I loaned Robben when his speaker was damaged in transit. The picture on the Z website is one I sent him that I thought he would get a kick out of. I expressly asked him to OK it with Robben's camp before posting it so there would not be confusion about Robben endorsing his product.
Robben liked the cabinet and sounded great that night. I hope that the picture has not caused him any problems. Mike Zaite ( Dr Z ) is a great guy and builds terrific amps by the way. They are point to point hand wired by the good Dr hisownself and are a tremendous value. He does make one channel switching amp, the 6545 I believe, but the rest are single channel. None of them are similar IMO to the famous #umble tone favored by Robben.
Regards

Thanks A, for the comments. Don't really care about the cabinet story, tonemandan, guess I shold have started a new thread. Too damn lazy, I guess.
I was intrigued by the simplicty of the Dr Z amp - some with 2 knobs. Now that is my kind of amp. Makes it easier when you get drunk and start seeing things. |

One of the things I hated about my Boogie MkII was having to make sure all the knobs were in the right place before I played. This pulled out, this pushed in, 7.2 on this knob, 3 on that one. What a pain. If something got bumped, the whole amp was off. I traded it for a Maverick which sounded the same as long and the knobs were within a number or two of where I left them. When I ordered my new Fuchs, I tried to get a number of things taken out or set at fixed levels so there wasn't so much to worry about, but had to take it in stock configuration other than some gain level tweaking (turned down compared to Scott's) and voicing more similar to the one I already have. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Hmmm OK, that could have gone without saying. My post was in response to quoolman. To answer your question: Dr Z players include
David Grissom ( Storyville, Dixie Chicks, Joe Ely, John Mellencamp )
Anson Funderburg
Brad Paisley
Buddy Whittington ( John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers )
Dean Parks
plus a whole slew of Nashville session players

A - I am glad someone else had this Boogie experience. I thought it was just me! I bought a MkII years ago, waited forever (in the days before you could buy them in stores) and was totally bummed when I got it. Same reaction - too much trouble to get a good tone and then it would change drastically with the slightest bump or tweak.
Dan - don't take my post wrong, I was just looking for people on the list who had personal experience with the Dr Z amp. |
